ok people have told me that this drug gets rid of suicidal thoughts. But does it make you gain weight? I need weight, i am still only 97 lbs. Its a result of my depression, its nothing like thyroid or anything. I cant gain the weight tho, even tho i eat like a wrestler.

You won't lose weight on Zyprexa, hint, hint.

Zyprexa has been proven to have effects on serotonin, thus it can augment antidepressants. Another study confirmed that last year. Psychiatrists have been using it off-label for OCD, too.

Here are the advantages of Zyprexa, as opposed to most antipsychotics and antidepressants:

--It will calm you down all day; when I took it, I thought it was better than a benzo.
--It has no anticholinergic effects.
--It has no sexual side-effects.
--It will definitely help you sleep.
--Zyprexa is convienient because it is taken only once at night.
--It is covered by insurance, generally.
--It augments antidepressants.
--Despite what rumors go around, Tardive Dyskenisia on Zyprexa is super-rare.

My friend took 20 mg of it at bedtime, and had no drowsiness in the morning. He didn't have any weight gain either.

I've only been on it for 9 days so I can't comment on the weight, but if you're thinking of trying it, here's the warning I wish someone had given me - the first time I took it, I fell so soundly asleep that a friend thought I was drunk because when he called me I was slurring my words and didn't remembr our conversation the next day. Start it on an evening when you don't have anything much to do the next day. Now, I feel better, though I'm sleeping 10 hours at night, I'm OK during the day and much calmer.

Yeah, it sure does. It can be sedating, too, which is useful if you have troubles with insomnia, agitation, etc. The main side effects people complain about are sedation and weight gain, so you may find it quite to your liking. It takes about 2 hours to kick in; one time I took it and then forgot that I had taken it. Then I fell asleep at the dinner table. D'OH! It's also very long-lasting, and if you start at too high a dose you may find yourself sleeping all through the night...and the next day.

My observation has been that it doesn't necessarily get rid of suicidal thoughts, but rather, it seems to have some kind of specific effect on suicidal *obsessions*. It's very curious, and I'm not sure what to make of it.

My own experience with Zyprexa: it was sedating, and even though I was depressed I gained some weight, but I didn't derive any benefits from it. I had been suicidal at the time, and I was taking an AD which had pooped out. I didn't feel worse, but neither did I feel better. Some people do feel worse on dopamine antagonists, so even though they can be very beneficial, it's a good idea to be cautious with them.
