paxil to celexa - weight loss?

Posted by katieb on April 26, 2002, at 19:21:18

my doctor switched me to celexa from 30mg paxil because at 40mg paxil i was getting manic but at 30 my anxiety came back. i'm just wondering about people's experiences with these two drugs and also specifically have people been able to lose the weight they gained on paxil on celexa?

thanks!

I used to take Celexa. I never had any weight gain on it. I recently tried Paxil. I gained 12 pounds in two weeks. Needless to say, I stopped the med. The Paxil weight gain is coming off though. I found that Paxil made me really hungry, so I ate twice as much as normal. I hope the Celexa works for you. I had to stop taking it, it made me manic (and at the time I wasn't on a mood stabilizer to stop it).

"Citalopram, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, has beneficial effects on hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis regulation, the sympathetic nervous system and glucose tolerance--creating weight loss in healthy men according to Swedish researchers.

In their double-blind trial, 16 healthy male volunteers with moderate obesity were treated with citalopram titrated to 40 mg/day and placebo for 6 months each in a crossover fashion, with a 2-month washout period between treatments. The men had no evidence of depression, but had reduced morning cortisol levels.

Investigators believe that the effects observed on weight were not secondary to an effect of citalopram on mood or on food intake."
