Ambien (another thread)

Posted by JohnP on May 10, 2002, at 13:23:21

I was recently talking to a friend about how I have to take Ambien for sleep deprevation and he told me it could cause brain damage (if abused, wich I've done on occasion to sleep faster).

I was wondering how many of 50mg tablets would it take to cause brain damage to a 6"1 220 pound person. (no I'm not asking for tips, simply because sometimes it takes me more than 2 or 3 to go to sleep).

I'm sorry 10mg..

Also I was wondering should I request new medication since it takes so many to go to sleep?

John,

I'd suggest switching to something else to help you sleep. Your brain must be used to the mechanism that ambien has.

Ambien is has SUCH a SHORT half-life, that by itself, IMHO, it does NOT provide a "full night's sleep" as advertised. It DOES get you to sleep, but you will wake up in 3-4 hours. Many, like me, will then do the wake-sleep deal the rest of the night.

The general conclusion has been that Ambien needs to be combined with a fairly long half-life benzo to really help you get to sleep, and STAY asleep.

what pax said.

also, someone else a while ago made the comment that i believe was right on... that after 3 days or so the ambien isn't as effective unless you are taking it initially under docs orders 15 days in a row or something like that to reset your clock (which worked perfectly for me).

i've found it works to rotate. ambien. ativan. trazedone. these all can help you sleep. i think the ativan and trazedone work for longer. but rotating is good, too. ask you doc.

i also know someone who routinely uses more than 20mg at a time. i have to use 15mg. myself (three 5mg tabs)

Hi John,

Why don't you ask your doc for 'zopiclone' (brand name 'Imovane' (by 'Rhone Poulenc')). It works at the usual dose of 7.5mg (compared with 10mg for Ambien), is sold in 30 tabs packs (just as Stilnox(=Ambien) is here in Europe) and has a formula very different from Ambien's, though it seems to be another 'benzodiazepine-like' hypnotic drug.

Please notice, however, that although I see it advertised along with Ambien, as a product 'offered' by one of 'those' off-shore pharmacies, I don't even know if it is currently available in the US.
Hope this little helps.

Best regards,
Iago
