Hunched shoulders and head lolling to one side

Posted by Denise528 on May 28, 2002, at 10:57:31

Does anyone experience this? I seem to get it with every SSRI I take, my shoulders seem to want to hunch up and my head feels like it is being forced backwards, sometimes lolling to one side, so I am sure I must look pretty vacant.

I experence strange sensations in my neck anyway and always have as part of my depression but the SSRIs definately seem to affect my posture even more. Yet when I took Zyprexa my posture felt a lot more upright like they were literally lifting me up.

I just wondered if anyone else experiences these sort of symptoms. They are the most pronounced side effects that I get on these drugs.

This sounds like a very common side effect. It's caused by muscle tention.
Ask your friends/family to tell you to drop your shoulders when they see you hunching up. I still have to tell myself 'drop my shoulders' and drop my head forward.

Or you could start smoking a pipe. People will just assume you are thinking. Only kidding.
Good luck.

Hi Helen

Thanks for the advice, I could start smoking a pipe but I think that would just worry people even more. They already think my behaviour is a bit odd.

I have had neck problems for years...taking drugs seems to cause shift in how the brain controls the muscles..my solution has been to fight it..in the way you would when trying to train for muscle mass..i.e. just basically break your ligaments when the tension hits..but mens bodies seem to respond to breaking...we seem to be able to build the supports structres that let the body hold us or do whatever we want physically..

However the idea is to pre-emptive the process..don't let it get a grip..perhaps get some muscle relaxants like Dicyclomine..or "cannabis" grab some weights and let them pull your shoulders down...you would not believe how much stress you can exert on your body to get it do what you want..

..from what I have seen many people with hunched necks don't have the full trunk body strength to hold a good posture...

ten years of this ligament crunching ..bone grinding regieme..have had its toll..and looking back at the state I'm in now...shoulders popping out my socket...I would say perhaps it would have been wiser to combine yoga with weights..
