Effexor Experiences

Posted by Roo on July 18, 2002, at 10:50:32

I started on my sample pack of effexor--almost immediately
I felt GREAT on just 33.7 mg's. (Almost suspiciously good...)
I was hoping that maybe i'd get lucky and be able to feel good
at that low a dose, but after 3 days or so, I lost the effect
and became depressed again. I am guessing it's because I need to
increase. What is the "average" dose of effexor? Is it (hopefully)
75 mg's? Also, does the constipation go away after awhile?
I've worked really hard and long to lose 10 pounds of weight I gained
while on lamictal, and it's steadily been coming down each week (my weight)...
I noticed the week I started effexor I gained nearly 2 pounds in one week.
I'm not sure if it's the effexor or not, but I don't know what else it
would be. I feel sort of sore and achy on it too, and my workouts are
harder. I liked the initial feeling of this drug and would like to recapture it,
but I'm worried about the side effects, and also hope to be able to keep it
at a relatively low dose. Any experiences welcome...Thanks...

The true AD effect does not kick in for 4-6 weeks.

Hi Roo, I was on Effexor XR for 3+ yrs, initially it was a great med, but I gained an enormous amount of weight on it, and lost all feelings emotionally. I was functioning but not living on it. I was totally devoid of all feelings, bad or good. My responses to events that had happened were not normal either. ie, my son's car accident. I felt nothing. I did what was expected as a mom with regards to his care, but I didn't even get upset when the call came in the night that he was in a horrific accident. I was just so numb to everything.

I believe the standard dose is 150mg - and it really does take about 6 weeks to feel the full effects. I was on 150mg for two prescription cycles and felt like it was not quite right. I'm now on my second cycle of 225mg (take a 150 capsule and a 75 capsule) and the new dose is just now settling in. The constipation was noticeable for me, but it decreased. Drinking lots of water and eating high fiber foods helps. I have gained a few pounds also, but I think it was due to initial demotivation to exercise. I'm back to exercising again and I hope to lose the 5-8 pounds I gained soon.

I started my effexor last Friday... and I am so confused I don't know whether i should take it am or pm... the bottle says am... but when I did on Sunday I was so dopey, I couldn't get off the couch all day I think I took 3 naps and then went to bed early - of course next am at 5 (ungodly early for me) I was wide awake... I tried taking it at bedtime and had very restless sleep...

I am desperate for this one to work, after the rage provoked by 2 weeks on wellbutrin, I am relieved by the lessening of my emotions. In some ways it reminds me of prozac... my skies are starting to turn blue again after several months depressed.

As far as dosage, my doc is working me up to 225..

Good luck and let me know how it goes for you..
Holly
