Side effects vs. Regular old emotions

Posted by amber_spirit on August 30, 2002, at 14:07:29

Any suggestions for how to tell a dr. that
sometimes I CAN TELL the difference between a
side effect from a medication and something that
is a result of the stressors in my life. I
keep getting the line that my medications are
fine and I just need to learn coping techniques
to manage my depression/mania. However, I could
feel the tension and agitation increase and
decrease along with my dosages. It's kind of like
the difference between being agitated because
I'm worried and flusterd about something versus
climbing the walls because some medication is
making me agitated.

Am I crazy in thinking I can tell the difference?

Not at all... ADs can cause agitation, particularly for people in the bipolar spectrum. Anyway, tell your pdoc that the AD is making you agitated. If your doc tells you it is all in your head I would seriously consider finding a new pdoc.

I get the same thing. But I can usually tell the difference by the amount of "physical" agitation that goes along with the med side effects. If it is a "med" side effect that causes agitation usually I cannot sit still and am pacing, etc. It helps to keep a daily diary of your meds, changes in meds, dosages, general mood, anxiety?, etc. That way you can see on a chart if a med is causing problems. I am very med sensitive and just a slight change in meds can cause an uproar with me. Pdocs say it's impossible to feel a difference but it does happen. My current pdoc is understanding and adjusts my meds to suit me and my med sensitivity. Charting it all might give you some more leverage with your doctor if you can show you have been keeping track of it all. Just an idea. Don't worry, you're not crazy, lol!
