DO I HAVE SCHITZOPHRENIA?

Posted by Tina Maria on November 5, 2002, at 14:55:57

Hi, I was wondering if someone could tell me if I have Paronoid Schitzophrenia or at least to some degee. My grandmother has it and I heard that it runs in the family. They also say that it skips generations, s that would mean that I am the one who actually has it. I sometimes get pronoid thoughts and accuse people of trying to do something against me and to hurt me in some way. I get very depressed at many times and start crying nonstop. and some times I throw things around and have these fit of rage and later on I wonder why I acted the way I had. My boyfriend thinks I should seak psychiatric help, I think I might have that disease that my grandma has. I need some major advice I am still young and worried that it would get worse in the future. Please HELP!!!!!!!!!

The best advice any lay person could give you is to seek treatment immediately.

Schedule a psychiatriac appointment.

You may also want to consider voluntary hospitalization for a period, depending on your life situation and the severity of your symptoms. Be weary, though- even those who voluntarily enter a mental hospital may fall victim to mean doctors... or at least from the horror story I read from a UK patient.

Hi Tina,

You should definitely go see a psychiatrist. It would be hard for anyone here to say if you had schizophrenia or not, but it does sound like something is going on. A psychiatrist would be the best person to diagnose you and put you on the proper medication if needed. You may also want to look up schizophrenia on the internet and see if you have the signs.

Try not to freak out about it, if there is something wrong, a psychiatrist will be able to help you. You've already taken the first step and recognized something doesn't seem right :)

Take care,

Krysti

Tina, I want to assure you that just because your grandma had schizophrenia doesn't mean that you or any other siblings or cousins will get it.

Years ago, doctors would wrongly label mental disorders they didn't understand as schizophrenia. My father had some sort of disorder & was labelled a paranoid schizophrenic but in retrospect, he didn't fit the criteria at all. It was a handy catch-phrase diagnosis then. I have one brother who has something weird about him but it's not easily labelled, but all others in the family are okay (outside of depression & ADD).

Before you commit yourself to any hospital, talk to your doctor about your worries. Hopefully, he's knowledgable enough to tell the difference. Many of us can act pretty strange when we're under stress & having trouble coping. It's often enough that we've just learned poor coping skills in dealing with stress. True schizophrenia fits certain criteria. Read something about it to rest your worries. Look over this site about schizophrenia:
http://www.hubin.org/publicfamilyinfo/diagnosis/index_en.html
It has the diagnosis criteria, different types, & related mental problems that seem similar.

I have to say that you sound much more bi-polar than schizophrenic...
The irritability - throwing things - perceptions issues like thinking people hate you when they don't etc... This can all be helped with a drug called Depakote.
And the depression - there are many drugs out there but Effexor XR might work best...
You just sounded so much like me that I had to speak up -- this is personally my current mix of drug therapy for very similar symptoms.
Also - talk to a psychologist every week...It really does help...
This is an opinion...Take it as you will.
