Glucosamine and Chondroitin?

Posted by BekkaH on November 18, 2002, at 23:54:17

Does anyone here take Glucosamine and Chondroitin? If so, what brand do you take, and how many milligrams of each? Also, what is the advantage of taking a glucosamine+chondroitin preparation with MSM?

Thanks for any information.

I hate to sound stupid, but what are you taking it for? My husband is on Glucosamine for an old stress fracture, and it has helped him immensely. I can let you know his dose if that's what you want. Good luck!

i found G+C excellent for my joints ... it is supposed to regenerate synovial fluid (C) and cartilage (G) ... MSM i believe just reduces inflammation... i think if there is an underlying joint problem though it's more of a temporary fix... but there is a good chance i am wrong :)

Great Santini and Cybercafe, thank you for your responses. I want to take it for my joints, but I'm not sure how much to take.

Bekka -

I put my husband on glucosamine 1500 mg and chondroitin 1200 mg per day. The bottle says you can take this up to three times a day, but he didn't need that much. Improvement may be seen within a few weeks. I bought the generic, and it was in one tablet for the G&C.

Good luck!

I take 2000 mg per day of glucosamine sulfate only (1000 mg in the morning and 1000mg at night) for my dodgy knees and I'm pretty sure that it helps.( I ruined my knees doing martial arts - karate). At one stage my knees were so bad that I could't even take my dogs for their walk anymore and running is still completely out of the question for me.

The reason I decided to take the glucosamine was that there is some good research that appears to back up the effectiveness of these supplements.

I can't really say much about chondroiton or msm but here's a link to a site that provides some details of the research that is available

Hi. Thanks for the reply. Did you have to take it for a while before you noticed a difference? I've heard that you have to take it for at least three months or so before the benefits become apparent.

The benefits sort of snuck up on me over a 6-12 month period though it may be different for others. I think that because there was a very gradual improvement in my symptoms I was not even aware of it. Sort of like your not aware of yourself ageing when you see yourself in the mirror every day until you look at a photo of yourself from several years ago.

You may get improvements within 6-8 weeks. For me the benefits became apparent after 6-12 months. I knew Glucosamine was working when I stopped taking it for a while and my knees worsened. Second time round I felt an improvement within 8 weeks of taking it again.

I also get a worsening of my symptoms if I drop my dose and once went backwards when I purchased a different brand to what had been working for me.

Therefore, if you have never taken it before I would recommend persisting with at least 1500mg per day for 6-12 months if you don't see any improvement really quickly, though 2000mg was the dosage that worked for me!
