Should I keep taking it ?

Posted by janejj on December 9, 2002, at 16:24:26

Hello,

I've been taking Prozac for over a year now. I still get moody and depressed sometimes, like normal people do. I think I've overcome my Dysthymia thanks to Prozac, but mainly just through a change in circumstances. I have no idea if the Prozac is still working ? I am scared to stop taking it just incase though.I don't know if I am benefiting from it or its just a waste of money!

If I were in your position, I would talk to the Doctor that put you on the Prozac and follow their advice for slowly withdrawing from it. If you go through that process alright, then maybe it's time to come off of it completely. Don't just stop it cold turkey though. That would be a bad mistake.

Jane, why not ask your doctor what he thinks? I've known people who going off an AD, when they thought they were fine, made them hit bottom again. But I've also had friends who took it for a while & no longer needed it. When they stopped it (most tapered off), they were fine. It's seems highly individual. If I were you, I would opt to stop it with the idea that if needed again, you could go back on it. I still firmly believe that the longer a person uses an AD, the harder it is to stop it with no problems. A year is not a long time yet.

And IF you decide to quit, do it VERY SLOWLY!!! Like me for example, after being 0n 40 mgs for over a year, I went down to something like 33.333 mgs (two pills, next day 1 1/2, then 1 1/2 again, I guess you could even forst go down to 2-11/2-2... and I kept that up for like half a year and now for a few months I have been on 30 and I don't want to go down further right now. But do talk to your doc!

Kat
