Help w/Effexor XR usage, please

Posted by JESSsMom on January 7, 2003, at 10:49:22

Hi all,

75mg/day of the XR really helps my GAD. The problem now is that since the GAD has been relieved, that nasty depression has kicked in.
I told exactly this to my pdoc and he had no answers except that the depression will resolve itself now that the GAD is under control.
Well, it's been 5 1/2 weeks on the XR for God's sake. Shouldn't I be feeling some relief from the depression by now? I am totally down, have no motivation whatsoever. I tried upping my dose to 112.5mg but the blurry vision and sweating were more than I could take. Plus, I'm not sure titrating is the answer.
I'd appreciate any thoughts.
Thanks,
JM

hey -
It sounds as if Effexor XR isn't working for you.
It is supposed to help depression and anxiety - you shouldn't be feeling depressed while on Effexor -- so maybe try something different.
That's all I can think of. Sorry to hear about the down time...I've been there and continue to go in and out of it myself.

Hi there,
Thanks for your response. The problem is that Effexor XR has almost completely put my horrific GAD into remission. I really do want to stay mostly panic-free. I just don't want to be depressed and sweaty (see my post re Cogentin below).
I wish I could lift this depression and find a med for sweating that doesn't make me have blurred vision, memeory problems, and confusion.
Thanks again :)
JM

Maybe you need to ask the doctor about combining the Effexor (which seems to work on the GAD) with another med to address the depression. You're on a fairly low dose of effexor, and it could be that you'd get more AD effect at a higher dose, but since you don't tolerate it well, I would ask about a combination strategy.

Hi--Noa--thanks.
As usual, I can hardly wait for my pdoc appointment on Monday. I am going to tell him we need to add something or titrate. The only problem with upping my dose is that I sweat even more.
How gross to be walking around with big sweat marks on your shirt.

I am on a combo of Effexor and Prozac. I assume the Effexor isn't treating your depression. You can ask your doctor if you can add in a small amount of another medication like Prozac. From what I am reading, it seems there isn't one CURE for everyone. Mixing meds is the way to go til you find a good match for your brain. Good luck.
