NARDIL and tobacco smoking: no interacton?

Posted by ace on January 22, 2003, at 20:43:41

Since being on Nardil, and especially at 90mg, or around abot dose times, I have noticed that sometimes when I smoke (not usually before morning dose) I get a pronounced head spin and dizziness and a little stomach nausea. I have read -- on a very professional monograph -- there is no interaction between Nardil and ciggarettes. Is this true?
BTW, I smoke 8-10 a day.

There definitely IS an interaction. Nicotine induces dopamine release, nardil inhibits dopamine breakdown - so you're gettting a stronger reaction to the nicotine as far as dopamine concentration than you would normally. There may be other interactions as well.

Yeah, but this doesn't make the blood levels of Nardil to fall. In other words, smoking has no effect on the therapeutic effects of Nardil, albeit your getting a much stronger reaction to the tobacco. Right?

It's the tobacco, more so than the nicotine..tobacco inhibits MAO-B...this is well documented, thus the "interacation"
