Some of the most common are lithium, thyroid hormone for TCA's. Atypical antipsychotics for SSRI's

I just wanted to mention Buspar, because my pdoc said it is mainly an augmenting drug. Supposedly works very well with SSRI's. I didn't fare too well on it due to SE's, but I was not on any AD. There have been several posts on the positive effects of it as an augmenting med.

Hi Elsie,
Sorry to hear that your Buspar trial didn't go well. THe fact that I've done well on Buspar is apparently a rare thing. I'm not using it to augment an SSRI, but a TCA. At this point I'm not sure which med is 'augmenting' which; I'm on 30 mg Buspar and 40mg nortriptyline, but that dose of nortrip is below the recommended minimum dose of 50 mg due to s/e. I must have a perverse nervous system or something.

From what I've read and from my own empirical research it would seem that combining two antidepressants are the best strategy. Combinations like Serzone and SSRIs or Remeron and SSRIs seem to work well, as well as TCAs and SSRIS. The pdf link that someone provided is really useful too. Just my two cents.

>I've read twice now in medical literture that buspar should not be taken with an AD- at least an SSRI, but maybe a TCA, too. I'll have to look it up again- anyway, I took buspar years ago and when it was combined with prozac or zoloft I felt like HELL. I was more depressed that ever, crying all the time, manic, etc..I felt much better when I stopped augumenting with the buspar.

Through my own experience, as well observing other posts, I have come to believe that both Buspar and Pindolol have limited effects as augmentors. They're mostly an important asset when trying trying to get an SSRI to 'kick-in' earlier at the beginning. Another aside though, Buspar has also been effective for sexual-side effects (I sometimes take 1-2 hours before the act). What is your primary dx? are you unipolar? mostly melancholic or atypical? How acute is your accompanying anxiety? The more info you offer up about your symptoms, the more people like you will be able to give you helpful advice. If not, you're going to be getting treatment suggestions that will be more hit or miss.
