Teenagers on Effexor XR

Posted by thraak on March 17, 2003, at 17:48:04

Hi. My sixteen year old daughter was put on Effoxor XR approximately ten days ago - March, 7th 2003. She takes 75mg in the morning, and 75mg in the evening. I have read many posts, regarding symptoms etc, but I was wondering if you could tell me if any of you are teenagers, so that I can relate to my daughter's symptoms. My daughter is extremely tired - sleeping approximately fifteen hours per day, has a headache every day, and says that she feels like her head is 'floating'. Are these common side effects (for teenagers) - do you know how long they will last? If anyone has any advice, opinions, regarding teenagers on Effexor XR, your comments would be greatly appreciated. I am particularly interested to hear from teenagers on this medication, or, parents of teenagers that are on this medication. Thank you.

I knew a girl who was 17 taking Effexor while we were in the hospital together. It's a safe drug for teens and her side effects are all "normal." A pain in the butt but normal. They should subside in a couple of weeks. A lot of anti-depressants have the same list of side effects but not every person responds in the same way or gets the same ones. Tell her to just hang in there and keep taking them. She's a brave girl.

TRD is correct. Effexor is like the other antidepressants in that they take a while to work. Usually 3 or 4 weeks to get a full effect. After a few weeks, the doctor might increase the dose since your daughter started on a low dose. Side effects are very common during the first few weeks and usually diminish.

i agree with TRD and Bill L. Just be aware that Effexor can cause pretty bad (and possibly long lasting) withdrawal if taken for long enough, once it is stopped (even if it is tapered down oftentimes).
