Medication advice HELP!

Posted by Rainee on March 27, 2003, at 11:26:44

Ok for you wonderful people people out there. I need some in put.
I have GAD that is for sure and have panic that is for sure.
I have depression that is for sure.
I take Lexapro and I have taken prozac before.
They both help with the panic but not the depression so much.
I come from a alcoholic family ( many generations)
So I'm sure chemically I'm off balance.
and I have issues because of being raised by sick people.
you get my drift.
I just don't know what to do about the depression?
I see bi-polar II in me. I see the cycla one.
Mild borderline.
I'm confused.
I'm already 100 pounds overweight so weight gains meds are scary but when I'm calmer I eat less.
does any one understand this?
anysuggestions on what to say to yet another new Dr. Tomorrow?
also I have yet to find a Doc I really like.
I have been on medicaid and now nothing so I have to take what I can get.
Thanks for your help!

Hi Rainee,
when your ill and don't find enough relief through taking medication, often you can start questioning your diagnoses. It is very easy to research many different diagnoses and find you fit the description for many illnesses (I don't know if you do this but I know I have). Its very easy to become confused as to what your suffering from, especially since many illnesses share common symptoms.
Tommorrow when you see your doc be as honest as you can about your symptoms. Tell him/her your fears of bipolar/borderline and then its his/hers job to set you straight, so that you don't find yourself ruminating over what you may or may not have.
I hope I've not been jumping to wrong conclusions here.
In terms of medication there's alot to offer since you've only tried 2 antidepressants(both SSRI'S). Trying another from a different class could be worthwhile, eg a SRI like cloripramine or an MAOI like Nardil. Nardil for example could keep the depression, panick and anxiety all under control. It works magic for one particular person on this message board. There are loads of other options too eg, augumenting the Lexapro with another drug like Lithium or Olanzapine.
Your doc has to make the decision concerning your next step, so try not to worry about all that stuff so much and be as honest as you can tommorrow. Just realise you have a huge chance of feeling a hell of alot better than you do now in the not so distant future.
Hope you like your new doc.
Good luck
Mark

Hi Rainee,
yep, I get your drift:-)
I really hope your new doc will be willing to work with you. Ask for samples, explain to him about MEdicaid, etc. What have you tried in the past for your depression? did any of it 'work'? I see you're on Medicaid. Does your state have a special prescription plan or just strictly medicaid???
You sound so much like me and all I can tell you is that I am close to 100Lbs overweight too and I am extremely catious about the meds that pose a potential weight gain for me-unfortunately Seroquel is great for sleep for me, but I have gained about 60 on it for sure.
For your possible BP II-have you ever been on a MS? what one? I have BPII and cycling and depression.
I wish you the best of luck, hope this helped and keep us posted:-)
Kristen
PS seems like a few of us are seeing our docs tomorrow-mine couldn't come soon enough! LOL
