HI Cubbybear,
How's it going with parnate? I know you were way down in the dumps before you got it and I was wondering how it's going now? Did you say weight gain is opposite of how people usually react? I am currently on Desipramine and occasional Ritalin combo, but am considering switching to Parnate which I did take at one time, but at a low dose of 10-20mg. Also, I did not take it everyday like you are suppossed to, so I think I had only a partial response. Hope you are much improved with Parnate. What dosage are you taking? Thank you. Angel1

Angel1Yes, you barely scratched the surface. I'm taking 40 mg per day and feel like my life has been given back to me. For the past 18 years, Parnate has worked wonders and perhaps it's the only AD out there that I could be satisfied with. I don't mind making the dietary sacrifices. I think I've seen posts from people who lose weight while on Parnate, but with me it has always been the opposite. I'm not sure if that's a side effect or just a natural consequence of regaining my appetite and pigging out.
As I tell everyone who's interested in switching to Parnate, do your research on it first and if you want to try it, tell your doctor. If he balks, get yourself another doctor who will prescribe it. Thanks for caring about me.

I have been on Parnate for just 3 wks and it is doing wonders for my depression too. After so many years of trying other things with limited success, it is like a godsend. I was interested in your comment about weigh gain because i am also experiencing that, and my appetite has definitely increased. I find, though, if i go too long without eating i dont feel well. Did you gain a lot of weight? Thank you, Mel

I am a fairly short guy (5 ft. 6 in.) and my "normal" weight is about 138. At the worst of my depression, it had plummeted to 118 (actually this developed over a period of 9 months). Within one month of starting the Parnate, I was back to about 132 and that's where I am now.
I forgot whether i mentioned it, but I've always found that this drug sharply increases my craving for carbohydrates and sweets (I have a strong sweet tooth anyway), and so that certainly is a factor in the weight gain.
Are you taking any other medications? I am also in the process of slowly weaning myself off Klonopin.

Thanks for the info on the weight gain - it concerns me because i am already overweight. I too have a real sweet tooth and find that the carbo craving is definitely a factor in the Parnate. I am also on Klonopin, .5mg at bedtime for sleep, but i have been taking that for years. Im still on only 20mg Parnate and plan to increase to 30mg - taking it slow because of potential side-effects. Maybe the increase will help with the weight gain? But, if it has to be a trade off with weight gain for depression relief, its an obvious choice, right? Parnate is the best thing i have ever taken. Best wishes, Mel
