Effexor withdrawal help! every other day?

Posted by John2222 on April 20, 2003, at 14:53:06

After being on Effexor XR for about last year (highest was 150 but mostly at 112.5 per day), 6 days ago I just tapered from 75 mg XR to 37.5 mg XR per day.

I'm starting to feel nausea now which I assume is adjusting to the 37.5.

But, what's the best way to take the FINAL leap? -- the leap from 37.5 to 0? My doctor said to take 37.5 every other day for 2 weeks and then 37.5 every 3rd day for 2 weeks, then that's it and stop.

I've read others say to pour out half of the 37.5 mg XR, reclose the capsule and hence taper to approx. 18 mg per day for a period of time.

Has anyone actually tried the every other day???

I thought Effexor XR had such a short half life that every other day would be like cold turkey start and stop every other day.??

THe problem with every other day is that
Effexor (even in the XR form) has a short half
life. You will feel strange taking it every other day.

I recomend taking a reduced amount. You can open the tabs and remove 2 spheroids the first day,
4 the second and notice little if anything.

Or simply pour the enire contents in a empty cup
then remove 2 spheroids (then 4 then 6,8,10)

Then roll them from the cup to your mouth and
swallow (The capsule itself does nothing its
just gel)

This would be a easier withdrawl for your body.

Good idea, linkage! And John, if at some point you begin to feel truly weird (i.e., electric shocks, etc.), you might ask your doc for a few Prozac to cover the rest of your E. taper-down. Prozac has such a long half-life that it is its own taper (a given dose isn't completely gone for 28 days).

Good luck---medlib

I took 1/2 pill of Bonine (for motion/travel sickness) today and that helped aleviate the nausea.

I still can't understand the every other day approach with Effexor withdrawal. I take mine in the morning with breakfast and I can TELL if I'm even an hour late taking it! I feel like it's 95% out of my system within 24 hours.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I noticed right away tapering from 75 to 37.5 that I feel more alert. But...more sensitive to feelings and moods (good and bad).

Maybe I should just stay at 37.5 for several months and see how it goes. How do I know when my brain and I am "cured"? Forever on Effexor?
