Lithium and Fish Oil don't mix

Posted by linkadge on June 28, 2003, at 18:38:46

Anyone else have this problem? Personally I don't know how dr stoll used the two together cause I get terrible vertigo and headaches etc. My mood is much better on the two combined but I just can't tollerate the combo.

Same thing happens when I mix lithium and Celexa.

You know, I was experiencing vertigo and thinking it was from Neurontin or klonopin, but I was also taking fish oil. Do you get the vertigo when you seperate the dosing time by more than 6 hours? I am thinking of taking the fish oil in the AM only, because my vertigo is worse at night and I take most of my medicine at night. I really need the mood support during the day for the most part anyway. It is funny how I figured it had to be a prescription medicine when supplements can also have side effects.

I was taking lithium 3x per day with fish one fish oil capsule each dose.

Fish oil by itself had an allerting effect and seemed to increase my attention. Lithium did the opposite. The combination makes me feel like someone is pushing me, or that the floor is shaking as I walk. Sometimes it feels like a giant magnet is pulling my head this way and that.

Neither by themselves does this, but fish oil by itself leaves me stable (but angry and irritable)

Have you tried upping your fish intake? A can of pink salmon has 2 or so grams of fish oil, and I think a can of sardines is similar. Frozen whole pink salmon are cheap, and are quite nice baked in foil. Maybe fish oil is just too concentrated for your system.

I notice if I take more than 600 mg EPA and 400 DHA at one time, I feel drowsy. Is this temporary or could it be I'm taking too much? I want to take more than 900 mg per day of the EPA, because I need more mood support. I also want to avoid the vertigo, but think I will if I take it during the day.

Try taking less fish oil, maybe you can find a dose where you get the benefit but not the vertigo.

Take it in divided doses (with meals)? Eat whole fish? I'm not surprised that you're drowsy (I've learned, especially from this group, that everyone is unique), although I wouldn't have predicted that happening.

I can only hope that your symptoms diminish with time. I don't know what to suggest.

Consider taking it at night-I recommend it sometimes for insomnia. The Eskimo-3 version is expensive but is very high quality and is available in liquid or capsule form. 5ml of the liquid contains 1500mg omega-3.
