Possible adhd?

Posted by Ingle Hart on July 19, 2003, at 17:40:44

I'm 16 and for the last 1-2 years I've been experiencing major psychological changes(extends beyond hormonal imbalance i believe)

I've gotten horrible social anxiety, to the point I don't even want to go anywhere anymore. I cant concentrate on anything, i have no attention span, im easily irritated, impatient, im fidgeting constantly. I noticed that even when im sitting still i'm tensed up, and CONSTANTLY moving some body part(every time i sit down i start shaking my leg instantly). The only thing is i'm not talkative at all around people i dont know, but once I get around the friends im comfortable with, i talk TOO much. I also have extremely bad problems sleeping because sudden thoughts come erratically and keep me awake for hours on end.

I tried paxil for a bit, it worked somewhat, but i dont want to be on anything experimental, not to mention the withdrawal was one of the worst 4-5 days of my life

Several of my friends have adhd, and I asked one of them if i could borrow 1-2 of his pills since he skips doses occasionally. It was a type of adderall with a /combo BARR in the title, but I can't remember the rest of it. One thing i noticed after taking 30 mg was that I was at EASE for the first time in recent years. I was not moving restlessly, my thoughts came easy and processed, i was able to have a easy flowing conversation with anyone and everyone i talked too(no uneasy silences), it generally just felt like i was normal for the duration of the effects.

could this be possible causes of adhd? or something else?

I know alot of people on this board have had experiences in the area and wanted to know your thoughts

thx in advance(sorry for format, comp crashed in middle of last one)

Hi, this site may help you out a lot:
http://www.psychcentral.com/addquiz.htm

I've been where you're at;) I was 16 once:) Is there maybe something at home or where you live that may be causing you to feel this way (no attention span, im easily irritated, impatient, im fidgeting constantly. I noticed that even when im sitting still i'm tensed up, and CONSTANTLY moving some body part)? Because you said once you get around your friends you're comfortable with, you talk. Don't worry if it's too much either-that means you feel good, you feel comfortable-that's what friends are there for-I'd say that's pretty normal-especially at 16.
Have you seen a psychiatrist? From what you say about being on Paxil, I'm guessing you have in the past? How many mg of Paxil were you on? How long were you on it?
Maybe you could see a psychiatrist again? I wouldn't advise taking your friend's meds though-even though you did feel better.
**Barr labs is the company that makes the generic version of the medication Adderall-that's all.
I wish you the best of luck!
Gal

Hey, I didn't know adderall is now available in generic. Thanks.

I went to the FDA site and found it very interesting. The Barr amphetamine mixed salts was approved in March.

BTW, in June, a boat load of companies seemed to have gotten approval for generic Remeron.

You know-it's sometimes always about the money nowadays.............

glad you found it interesting,

I have seen online screening tests for ADHD that you might want to take a look at.

Here's a link to a diagnostic description:
http://www.mentalhealth.com/dis1/p21-ch01.html

ADHD can be very difficult to diagnose. It resembles and has many overlapping symptoms of so many other illnesses. I think the best advice anyone here can offer you is to seek a doctor specializing in both ADHD and other mental illnesses.

Good luck to you.

It's been generic for a while -- I've been taking the Barr generic Adderall for about a year and a half, and it works well (and is very cheap). With my insurance, I pay about $10 for a 3-month supply (180 5 mg tabs). I think they've continued to sell it while the lawsuits drag on.

I've recently started taking medication for ADD and it's helped quite a bit with focus, concentration and, believe it or not, the ability to sit still. From what I've read, this is because these ADD symptoms are caused by a lack of under-activity in the frontal lobe of the brain, which is "fired up" by a low dose of stimulant throughout the day.

I was fortunate enough to pick up a great book -
"Healing ADD" by Daniel Amen MD. He's a leading authority on ADD and has been able to isolate 6 specific types of ADD though 3-D brain scanning.
It's important to discern ADD type because different treatments are used, and the self-evaluation developed by Dr. Amen is relatively simple and easy to use. For more information and the latest on ADD research, go to his website at www.brainplace.com - it sounds to me like you might very well have one of these ADD types and could be helped with medication.
