Hello everyone! I wasn't sure if this post showed up so i'm putting it out here again. I am weaning myself off of everything! Celexa ruined my life for two years. Side effects: vivid nightmares, feeling of living in a vacuum, not in the present moment, loss of emotions and interest in anything, couldn't laugh or cry, living in a total, apathetic, zombie-like state.
Something happened to me that when I woke up, I knew i didn't need these pills to manage my life. Once you realize that, and feel you have the strength to do it on your own, it's a wonderful feeling!!
If I can do it, anyone can!
Just a little positivity for everyone who's sick of SSRI's.
Good Luck All!!

When you first started them you stayed on them because even the side effects were a heck of a lot better that what you were experiencing.
When people want to get off them, they often are looking through the optimistic eyes of the Antidepressant.
Life events cannot permanatly change brain chemistry. I know those who have got married and then thought that they were so happy they didn't need them anymore.
*Any* positive event can turn sour when depressed.
Just be cautious thats all. And watch for the warning signs.

Lexapro is the newer, more pure form of Celexa. When I switched from Celexa to Lexapro last year, I had fewer side effects and felt mentally more sharp. Try Lexapro.

I might do the same if I feel bad again when I come off the Zyprexa. This time I'm taking more Cellexa so either I will feel worse or better when the Zyprexa is gone.

Cecelia,
I wish you success in your endeavor to stop taking medicine. I just want to share some of my experience with friends who independently decided that they don't need medicine anymore. Those stories have kept me on my medication. Those stories might re-enforce your decision to stay off medicine.
My Uncle, once stabilized on medicine, would independently decide that he was fine and did not need medication. Well, after independently stopping the medication on his own he started sacrificing cats in his back yard and he would disappear for long periods of time without being able to account for where he'd been. (My Uncle was Bipolar with Psychosis.)
A friend of mine at University would get stabilized on medicine and she would decide on her own that she was fine and did not need the medicine. After independently coming off of the medicine she would have wild mood swings. She lived on my floor at a dormitory. She would really disrupt life on our floor while her condition went unmedicated because she thought that she did not need medication.
These are just two of the many stories of people who I know who independently decide to quit medicine once treatment becomes stable. They reason that they feel fine and they don't need meds. Well, they do feel fine on the meds. There seems to be some disconnect in regards to taking meds and feeling better for these people.
I've had two independent psychiatrists really educate me on this. They have explained to me over and over again that my medicine does not cure my illness, it alleviates the symptoms so I can function. They explain that the medicine is not a cure with a real conviction that helps me to remain on my medications.
Oh, I question when and if I should get off of the meds. I also know the stories I have experienced of people somewhat like me who have decided without medical help to discontinue treatment. These stories tell me that I need to rely on good medical judgment in these things in order to be clear on how to have the best mental health I can.
I wish you blessings on your journey no matter what you do with it. For me, my journey has taught me some powerful lessons. I hope you learn what you need to learn about yourself to get better.
Blessings,
Simcha

>>I hope this was meant to be some kind of joke (what a sick one if so).Simcha's response was very encouraging and supportive of your decision, just gave a word of caution. We're suppose to be here to help each other, right? Maybe your emotions are not as under control as you think they are. Worrier.

Hello Cecilia,
I can certainly relate to your experiences with Celexa and other ssri's. You don't need permission from anyone on this board to stop taking Celexa or anything else; however, I would like to suggest that you TAPER off of your medicines as slowly as possible in order to minimize the likelihood of rebound symptoms. I read somewhere that when tapering off of psychotropic medicines, it's best to lower the dose by not more than ten percent per week. Celexa is available in liquid form. If you buy a very finely graduated medicine dropper, it will be easier to lower the dose in minute increments each week.
Good luck to you!
Bekka

Cecelia,
I think you misunderstood my entire comment. I was trying to support you no matter what decision you made.
For your information, it was my Uncle who was psychotic who sacrificed cats when he went off of his medications. It was an example I knew of where meds were clearly needed even when my Uncle felt he did not need them.
This has kept me on my meds. I have a balanced life and I will take your comment to mean that you are suffering at the moment. I'm trying to be civil here.
Dr. Bob,
How am I doing here? I tried not to accuse...
Blessings,
Simcha

I believe there's no doubt that you didn't read Simcha's post accurately. Such an over-reaction could imply some instability and anger issues. I hope you are pro-active in seeking treatment for whatever ails you.

I can relate to you-I was supposed to start Lexapro 2 days ago but I am researching other medications and solutions. I had hair loss from Celexa and I know that these drugs are very similiar. you are not alone-the nurse also told me that NONE of her patients experienced side effects on Lexapro-yea, right!!
I had only seen this social worker 2 times and she told me to take med.-she basically won't be helping me through therapy unless I take medication as well-I have had some bad experiences w/medication
Prozac-weight gain
zoloft-no help and made anxiety even worse
and then w/celexa and hair loss
For those out there w/minimal side effects, you are very lucky.
I just have been through 2 doctors, and then 2 social workers who really have not helped me unless they medicate me-even though one told me that I am not depressed. I have anxiety issues, but she refused to prescribe Ativan (she said it was addictive), even though I took it 2 yrs ago w/no problem.
Let me know how you are doing w/everything.

Sounds like cats didn't help at all. Experimentation and debate are healthy. Science is imperfect.
