Question for Ame Sans Vie

Posted by MelD on August 24, 2003, at 12:52:08

I have read some of your posts on Mirapex and have tried to research the drug, but have gotten no helpful info. Im asking on behalf of my 23 year old son. He has had ADD and depression problems most of his life, and has been through so many meds - SSRIs and antipsychotics. He is currently on 120mg Strattera but is still depressed, having weaned off Paxil. Some of the things you have written about the results of Mirapex make it sound like just what he needs, but i dont want to ask the pdoc about it without understanding it better. Could i have your thoughts on this? Thank you so much, MelD

These abstracts should be helpful to both you and your son's doctor. There's mention of Mirapex having a "hedonic" effect, which means it helps the patient to better receive pleasure from things in life that they may now have lost interest in. They also mention it being helpful for apathetic, depressed individuals. The rest of it is mainly med-speak, but his doctor will be able to understand it. :-)

Another thing I can suggest -- if side effects from Mirapex are too bad, maybe give Requip a try, which is a very, very similar drug.

Also, you mention he's tried SSRIs, antipsychotics, and Strattera... but what about about MAOIs (for the depression) or stimulants (for the ADD and depression)?

Be sure to let me know how things turn out!

Thank you so much for the info! Very helpful and most appreciated. His pdoc would love to see him on Parnate, but is hesitant because he had a paranoid psychotic episode brought on by abuse of alcohol, marijuana and ephedra. I gathered the doc is unsure of just what he may have done to his brain and wants to be cautious. Again, i truly appreciate your response. Take care, Mel
