How would a BIPOLAR react if they were placed ONLY on an anti-dep WITHOUT a mood stabilizer? I KNOW they could become manic/hypo but
could the AD make them agitated/irritable/very angry without a mood stabilizer?

gal/Caleb,
I've let my lithium level get down to downright PUNY levels, something like .016 or thereabouts, by taking only 300 mg/day of lithium (and I'm a bigger guy).......I havn't been feeling very good at all in many ways....I was blaming everything on the AD when perhaps I should have been blaming the PUNY lithium dose and level......the thing is that I DON"T get manic or "high" when taking very little lithium, rather my AD just doesn't work much and I feel depressed, irritable, agitated, etc......I HAVE had problems w/ some AD's but this time I think that my PUNY lith. level is the real culprit....I've always only needed to take less lith. than most bipolars but this time I think I decreased it TOO much.

Not a good idea. That was the precise thing that set me off into manicland---until that time, everything was o.k.

>>>>>>>>>> Everything was okay up til then? Then why did you take the anti-dep. in the first place?
Also, when you say the AD (without the mood stabilizer in place, correct?) set you off into manicland---exactly what happened...how did you react? Thank you so much for sharing! Much appreciated!

Hi McPac:-) Not much to tell except that I had first been on SSRI's because I was not diagnosed with bipolar until 1999, 4 years after the fact. I really went ballistic. I just had no feeling. I was all over the map. I couldn't sleep, I couldn't feel basically. I couldn't concentrate because my moods were mostly just blah. I felt confused. I didn't become angry though. I was just very irritable and agitated and just *surviving*
Does that make sense?> How would a BIPOLAR react if they were placed ONLY on an anti-dep WITHOUT a mood stabilizer? I KNOW they could become manic/hypo but

hey McPac, I tried Lithium for the first time this summer and did very well on it for the whole 17 days I was on it. My levels remained at .08.
Have you increased your Lithium back up yet???
Hope to hear back.
Hang in there:-)

Well, I started to take Zoloft on advice from my family Dr. I told him over and over that i couldn't sleep. I can only guess that he thought i was depressed and put me on the AD. That was bad medicine on his part(according to all of my Pdocs). Anyway, that's what pushed me over the edge. I could sue him but that's not my style.
