Hi Joe,
Why did your doc put you on Depakote before giving you Lexapro? Is it common to prescribe Depakote before using Lex? Thanks!

I would say it all depends on what your diagnosis is? Does you doctor want you on a mood stabilizer in conjunction with an SSRI?

and according to amen some folks need to be pretreated with a mood stabilizer before starting an ssri

so hat's what i asked for and doc agreed

i still get some agitation from the lex am now at 20, but the depakote helps that, and was making me calmer even before the lex got started

There is no clear-cut answer to your excellent question, in my humble opinion. It might depend on what dosage you are on of the Depakote. If you're on a fairly high dosage, you probably could try to REDUCE (not eliminate) it after the Lex. kicks in.

However, since you said you were manic after a few days on Lex, my advice would be NOT to cut back a whole lot on the Depakote, but again, if you're at a highish dose, there probably is room to cut back.

By the way, people who have mood swings (BiPolar) are often started on a Mood Stabilizer (eg Depakote) BEFORE an a-d, especially an SSRI, which is known to risk mania.

Hi,

I've been on Depakote for almost 20 months. After sobering up I was diagnosed with Bipolar with severe depression episodes between the highs. Duh! I could have told them that from the start! Anyway, the Depakote has helped mellow out the Lexapro. It was making me a little wirey but that seems to be diminishing. I'm at day 18 with Lexapro. I hope this helps.
Thanks, Treb
