Hi, Larry. I haven't been around here in a while, so I apologize if you've already tackled this question.
I've been taking fish oil and am now reading all the warnings about mercury and pcbs in fish -- what's your view on the safety of the fish oil supplements?
Thanks!

In reply to Larry! What's your take on fish oil/mercury/pcbs?, posted by mopey on September 1, 2003, at 11:31:16
I hear that the regulations are pretty tight on fish oil these days. Plus, if you buy from a reputable brand Ie NOW foods - they will give you a guarenteed maximum content of the contaminants.
I'm shure you can even have tests done on the oil yourself to confirm what the company guarentees:)

No apology required. Your health is at issue.

Fish oils do retain a variety of other contaminants, but some products have been cleaned up. Quite frankly, PCBs are *not* the villains they're made out to be. They're not very toxic at all. Moreover, any product you eat that has fat in it has PCBs in it. There's nothing unique about fish oil, in that regard, although there would be a higher concentration in fish oil, than e.g. olive oil.
I'm not worried about the contaminants in fish oil. If you are, you can obtain purified fish oils, at a higher price.
