I have this friend, and he has these symptoms-
"anixiety, fear, irritability, anger and tension"
which more or less ad up to protracted suffering. This makes things somewhat tricky in his domestic life. It's not so fun for the wife and kids nor for him. He is newly sober, just under a year. He absolutely loves being sober. Yet, as he often describes it, "his brain is on fire."
He's understandably unenthusiastic about medication, though not opposed it. In the last three years more than one shrink has suggested he be taking some med (they don't say which). He tried seroquel for sleep. Not sure it did much.
What do you suggest might be a good medication to start with? I mean the best med to try first? And at what dose? Of course he'll get professional guidence, I just want to hear some ideas. Thanks

>I had a pdoc that told me once that Paxil and Effexor were the best AD's for anxiety (before Lexapro was on the market). I would NOT suggest Effexor for a first time AD user. My husband has no adverse sexual side effects on Paxil, so I would recommend that first. I took it successfully for years, also. And I'm a friend of Bill W also.

Henry O,
1200 mg/day of Neurontin (gabapentin) might be worth a trial. But I'd want to know more about the patient’s symptoms before suggesting a particular medication. For example, was your friend self-medicating with alcohol? Does your friend struggle with depression periodically? Does your friend ever get in an energetic up-beat mood with lots of great ideas in his/her brain?

Zyprexa; has worked great for me for 6 years now. I have had all those simptoms. The zyprexa keeps me out of psychosis with my PTSD. 10mg was my best dose, thats what I had been taking for the most of the 6 years, just last month I went down to 5 to give it a try. Its a sedating, calming, anti-anxiety, anti-fear, calms tension, makes you forget anger, and help you sleep medicine; but still function like your not sick. I've never had any better luck with a medicine.

Definite self medicator with alcohol, no manic tendencies, sporatic depression. I'm wondering about Dilantin, Zyrexa or Klonipin. I need to hear more about Dilantin.
This is the end of the thread.
