WOW! I went to my doc today, and he hinted I could have some form of borderline personality disorder, even though he doesn't like specific DSM-IV classifications. I am one of the few, it seems, who responds so well to antipsychotics...VERY VERY well actually. We *MAY* be going with a higher dose antipsychotic, and lowering the benzo a bit. A mood stablizer may be needed, but with my awful past response with these, I doubt it. It had a disinhibiting effect like when you are strung out on high dose benzos. I did not find them calming in the least bit. Now..my question is....which antipsychotic?
First off, since I am without insurance, Zyprexa (which I am now taking) cannot be a lifelong thing, or I'll be broke! Plus, I find I need 2x a day dosing with it. AND..there is the diabetes thing and such. Risperdal was also close, but I needed 2-3 x daily. This gets very, very pricey, and my folks are both retired and forking out 400 bucks a month for my meds is not possible.
I'd be willing to stick to a small dose of an atypical antipsychotic, and another small dose of a typical (less potent) antipsychotic. Mellaril looks good, but the experience of a poster on here with the eye problems bugs me. I guess there is the original...Thorazine, which comes in small doses as well, and has a sedating nature (which I like about Risperdal and Zyprexa, and even seroquel.) Anyone else on a typical at a small dose for a long time? I am hearing that from users, they are just as relieving as atypical ones, and diabetes isn't an issue. I am not really interested in high-potentcy ap's like Haldol, but if anyone has been on it for a long time with little ill effects...please let me know!
Prozac is my antidepressant...as I have tried mostly all over a ten year period, and tolerate it the best. Any experience or advice, I'd greatly appreciate.Thank you SO much if you read this far...I appreciate all of your help. Thanx..:-)

Hi Jay,
Being a BPD'er myself, and working for a BPD nearly charity I know quite a few people who are having pretty good success with Quetiapine (Seroquel).. Personally Zyprexa was the one that worked best for me, but I'm fed up with weight gain in atypicals, so am having a med break right now after a unsuccesful trial with Amisulpride (allergic reaction).
Good luck
Nikki

Thanks for the suggestion. I did try Seroquel, but it made me a bit too drowzy. BUT, maybe I just need to give it more time. Do you have any links on BPD and meds, and in particular do you know of typical antipsychotics being used?
I am sorry for your rough time with Amisulpride. Have you ever considered one of the low potency typicals?
Thanks so very much,
Jay

Hi Jay,
I don't like typicals as much.. they seemed to make my head a lot more "cotton wooly" and just didn't work as well with me.
This is the links page on my groups Website (Borderline UK) so they might have some useful links..

We do have info on our website (http://www.borderlineUK.co.uk) but the meds section is still under development.
have you ever given DBT a try?? Alot of people on our list have really been helped by it.. and for me CBT helped a hell of alot.
Nikki x
