Just got this prescribed today. It's been a long-time coming getting on something, but finally did it. I've never taken any kind of prescription medicine before, and am worried about some of the side effects I've been reading about on the board. I already don't sleep, can't get much more down, don't need to gain any weight, but other than that, it looks like a good med to try. Any encouraging thoughts for me? Thanks!

Welcome to the board. If you have time, it may answer a lot of your questions to go back into previous periods and read the Lexapro thread, lots of good info and personal experiences.
Breifly - Lex may take 6-8 weeks befor you notice *benefits*. For some (myself included) initial side effects can be troublesome and even severe (I had to call in sick to work whole 2nd week). I started @5mg, which many people have done, to try to minimize side effects, then raise dose to 10mg around week 4-5 when most of the side effects should be subsiding.
I lost 10 lbs. and have not gained it back - I needed the weight off anyway. I suffered insomnia all my adult life, but now I sleep soundly through the nite, and seldom wake up at 3-4AM like I used to. If I do wake up, I can go right back to sleep, and do not lie there waiting for my alarm to go off as I used to. Just the fact that I can now sleep has done wonders for me, as the insomnia was a major contributor to my depression.
I hope this is encouraging, I like you had never taken any meds befor I started the Lex. I am now into month 6 and am doing so much better.
Please come back often and keep us posted on your progress!~~~8|8

It's my 3rd antidepressant, and the best so far. My initial side effects were a little jitteriness and some tiredness during the day. But they were not too bad. Also, they became less of a problem over time. The net effect on my emotional health has been excellent. Good luck!

Hello. I am going on my third week of lexapro and the best advice I can give is to stay with it for awhile. The first two weeks were horrible and I really had some bad side effects. However, I already feel much better now and it's been like that for the last few days. Sleep is also a problem for me and it hasn't changed much yet, but I'm giving it time. Good luck and try to make it through the initial side effects!

Thanks for the encouraging news! I just found out that my sister was just prescribed this same medicine, this will be her second type of med. She started with 5 mg (same as me) 4 days before me. The only effect so far is dry mouth, and I'm taking my dose at dinner time. Sleep will come eventually, until then, I have sole control of the remote! Thanks again!

I tried Lexapro and the side effect that made me stop was the nausia my stomach would be upset from the minute I took it until I woke up. I didn't have sleeping problems on it but always felt sick.
