Im about to start adderall. What should I expect?

Posted by loolot on September 17, 2003, at 21:43:09

I am going to start adderall as a supplement to wellbutrin (450) which is pooping out.
I am really tired and depressed now, so I am welcoming the change, but otherwise I am nervous.
What if I cant sleep? When should I take it (times-2x/day) and what can I expect? Side effects?

Hi loolot,
I have taken adderall w/ wellbutrin,300mg a day.
I believe it worked ok.I suffered somewhat though from agitation ,I switched to effexor xr with adderall
then prozac w/adderall,which was best yet however my doctor switched me to stratterra w/adderall,when I asked to increase the prozac from 40mg to 60 mg even though I had been up to 80mg of prozac in past as a 450well/80mgprozac combo.
I did not like the stratterra/adderall combo,so doctor switched me to focalin/adderall combo which is best,I also take xanax prn daily.
"I like the IR release adderall myself,I take it twice dailly, early morning and afternoon.I used to take 300mgs wellbutryn about 4-5pm when adderall was wearing off.Let me know if I have confused you enough yet<lol> I am getting tired,I will be happy to elaborate if you have any more questions. Thank You!Michael

Strange. I wonder why your doc didnt want to go higher on the prozac. Also Stratterra and Adderall seems like a strange combination, no?
Arent they both stims of some kind?

Sounds like you (or your doc) consistently likes the adderall, though. Why do you like it?
Were you taking it for depression?
Did the wellbutrin wear off? Is that why you switched?
Did the adderall give you any physical side effects?

I think it seems strange Rxing Focalin and Adderrall together.I,ve seen Srattera Rxed with a stim before, but not 2 stims at the same time.Wonder why he did that?Festus

aside from heroin/painkiller detox, i've never had worse depression coming off a drug than i did with adderall. absolutely disabling depression for about 8 to 10 days. dangerous drug - works great for the first few days and then you're chasing.

I take adderall for add,I like it because it calms me and helps me to stay on track. It also helps with depression.
I have always been the one who insisted on staying on the adderall,I have stated to my pdoc that I just needed to augment it.
Strattera is norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor,so I guess it could act like a stim, depending on your bodys response.
The wellbutrin works but the adderall works better
for me.I just wanted to fine tune adderall so I remembered well/prozac combo working well and I thought I would try the augment of adderall with prozac due to long half life also.
Adderall wears off and I need full coverage for at least 7am to 7-9pm at night.
My pdoc did not want to go higher than 60 mgs IR adderall per day so we have been on this long road of trying differnt combos to see what works best.
adderall can exacerbate anxiety, thats ok though benifits far outway that SE.Adderall is good med stims get a bad rap.
You may loose some of your appetite at first that will come back.I guess after a few years I can't remember all physical side affects, sorry.
I don't think I suffered form physical side effects
I always kept taking my vitamins plenty of water and exercise. I almos tforgot, when I stopped the caffeine intake, adderall worked better. I drink some hot green tea at night and the rest of the time just filtered water.
Well I have probablly rambled on to long so I hope I have given you some insight, let me know if i can help with any more info, maybe I wont get to the board so late next time and I can be more direct.
Thank you,michael

I've taken Adderall at a low dose (10 mg) daily for almost two years, and find that it helps with focus and concentration (I have ADD). It also has a definite antidepressant effect for me. It's never caused me insomnia, and actually has a calming effect. I've had no problem at all going off it for a day or two, other than less focused thinking. I make a point of skipping it here and there to help avoid tolerance.

A few months ago I also started Strattera, and it augments the Adderall very well. I'm currently at 60 mg/day (about to go to 80 mg), and find the combination helpful for focus and motivation. If you go the Strattera route, I'd definitely recommend that you increase the dose slowly -- for me each dosage increase had annoying side effects, but these went away quite quickly.

Stimulants + Strattera seems to be becoming a pretty common combo, and this certainly works for me.

I worry about the chasing thing, too.
Do you recommend anything which has worked better for you?
I do well with domaninergic/norep drugs. Wellbutrin was heaven sent when it worked. Sigh.
