Ativan or Xanax dose for med sensitive

Posted by fab on September 20, 2003, at 0:15:23

Hi all, I'm really med-sensitive and wanted to know what experience others who are med sensitive have had with ativan or xanax? I hear there is the possibility of an anxiety rebound effect? Is that worse for the med sensitive and what if you just take it (one of them that is, not both) as needed... like during a panic episode etc? Same deal? Lowest effective dose anyone has taken? I do not do well with SSRIs and currently only want to take a med on an "as needed" basis. Thanks!

Hi fab, I am very med sensitive. I've taken both Ativan and Xanax in the past and I seemed to have better success with Ativan~by far.
I never had any anxiety rebound effect with either one. The lowest dose I took of Ativan was 2mg, worked wonderfully with the Effexor I was on at the time. Hoping you'll get some more posters who may be able to help ya better.
Good luck!

I am med sensitive also. I too have had better luck with Ativan. I have taken doses as low as .25 mg to 2 mgs. at a time. Xanax is alot more powerful than Ativan. I think which you choose might also depend on how bad the panic attacks are. I also had a bad rebound/depressant effect after Xanax wore off, but I didn't with the Ativan.

Ativan or Xanax dose for med sensitive + Alcohol

Thanks so much to both posters for the feedback!
Today I cut a .5mg ativan into about 6 pieces and
took a piece (I am that nervous about meds!). It took the edge off (slight but noticable) and I know I can safely take more next time. Anyway, it's Saturday and I wanted to have a beer with a friend about 4 hours after taking the ativan and called the pharmacist and they said best not to. How long after taking ativan can a person have a social drink? Searched the internet and they say scary things like you can have a coma if you have a drink & ativan...etc... I guess if you were out for dinner and had a glass of wine and had a panic attack an hour later you couldn't take ativan either? Can go without alcohol without a problem but just want to know if there really is that much of a problem and how long one should wait after taking ativan if they would like to have a drink etc. Thanks very much everyone!

Personally, from my own experience, I can have a drink or two on my meds and be fine (even though they all say not to). I think it depends on your individual reaction. I would ask a pharmacist. They should be able to tell you what the type of reaction might be if you mixed the two. Being that Ativan is a benzo, the combo of the two might make you very sleepy. Glad you tolerated the Ativan well. I am med sensitive and have never had a problem tolerating the benzo drugs, mostly the SSRI's.
