My friend who is a counselor and knows me very well suggested that I take Adderall for Generalized Anxiety Disorder. I had been taking Effexor OR Paxil OR whatever for the past five years.
It didn't seem to make sense to me why Adderall would work, but IT HAS. In fact, it is the first medication that has put a dent into this rage of anxiety I feel.
Has anybody experienced the same thing? Why would it work? I'm confused.

Dear Doyouknowhim
To say that Im interested in your experince is a understatement. However can you give us more info such as what drugs you took and how they worked for you. What type of GAD you had, did you also suffer panic/depression etc. Did the drug work quickly or did the effects get better with time.
Im must admit im baffled why adhd drug would work but I guess that a lot of people ignore dopamine with effective disorders.
I look forward to your reply

For what it's worth, Adderall calms and relaxes me better than Xanax, Klonopan, Seroquel ever did.
The right dose (for me, 30-40mgs) works within 15-20 mins.
However, i was diagnosed ADD, which is why i usually take it. A non-ADD associate tried 10mg, and felt uncomfortably excitable.

OK, here goes:
I have been dealing with anxiety since 1997. It started with some worries over some minor health problems, which then sort of pushed out other anxieties I had been dealing with throughout my life. I'm 33.
I have never had a panic attack, but I am in a constant rush of anxiety 24/7. The feeling I can equate it to is ... walking through a haunted house and knowing something is about to jump out and scare you but you don't know from where. My mind races 100 mph while my body goes 1 mph. It's an overdose of adrenaline rush. Heck, I don't even remember what I fear anymore. I fear fear. It's like an auto-body response.
I have tried about everything ... Prozac (made me climb walls), Paxil (made me hungry), Zoloft (nothing), something that starts with an S (made me sleepy) and Effexor (gave me a little too much energy). I have just about always been taking 1mg/Klonopin and 300mg/Nuerontin along with the above.
Nothing really ever put a dent into the anxiety. My friend, who is a Christian counselor and knows me very well, said he had been thinking about my personality traits for a while and told me to talk to my pdoc about Adderall. My pdoc was very hesitant, but I insisted on trying.
I started off on 10mg, along with the Klonopin and Nuerontin. I didn't feel an immediate effect but after a couple of days realized I hadn't been feeling as much anxiety around the clock. I have gone up to 30 over the last month. I don't feel as good as when I initially started taking the Adderall; it seems like it has lost a little bit of its edge. But I definitely still feel better than when I wasn't taking it. So I view it as part of the solution, but not the entire solution.
I am very interested in hearing any and all feedback on this. So please post back. Thanks, Michael

Well I must admit Im still wondering why this particulat grouping of drugs is working for you. I must admit that I suspect that you are low in GABA and suffered peti mal fits when you were a child ( just guessing here).
This would fit into you not getting a lot of benefit from SSRI drugs such as Zoloft.
You might want to look at ways of improving your Gaba production in your body ( Im sure diet might help here)
Regards Robert
PS dont up your Adderall se if you can keep the doses at a lower dose like 10 mg. Just remeber with drugs more is always not better

Robert:
I assume peti mal means siezures and no I did not experience that as a child. I am interested to know your thoughts on Adderall for anxiety ... does it make sense to work? Have you ever heard of something like that? I'm not saying Adderall is the answer, but it has helped me more than all the SSRI's put together. Do you have another drug to suggest? Thanks for the input, Michael
