Wellbutrin

Posted by sarahsundae on November 17, 2003, at 13:14:23

I have been taking Wellbutrin for a short time now. When I started, I believe I lost a little weight. But since uppping the dosage to 200mg I believe I am starting to gain weight. Is this possible? I haven't seen too many people who have gained so maybe it's just me? I am scared out of my mind right now. I have an eating disorder and gained 20 pounds back on Effexor. Since I stopped the Effexor I lost 10 pounds but now I am afraid I'm going to gain even more. I need the help for my depression, but gaining weight is just not an option for me.

TIA!

Sarah

I believe it says quite clearly on the prescribing information that Wellbutrin should not be given to someone with an eating disorder. I am quite surprised your pdoc didn't pay attention to that. Perhaps you should try a different AD.

All the best,

RE: "I believe it says quite clearly on the prescribing information that Wellbutrin should not be given to someone with an eating disorder"
________________________________

The "eating disorder" that causes concern and caution with Wellbutrin is Bulemia. In the early days, before the maximum dosage was not limited to 400 mgs/dose, a relatively high percentage of persons taking Wellbutrin suffered seizures. A high percantage of those persons who did have seizures were bulemic. It is suspected that either the cause or the result of the Bulemia in those persons made them susceptible to seizures.

Regarding weight gain, gaining weight is not a common side effect of Wellbutrin. In fact, according to the package insert, more people lose weight than gain weight while taking Wellbutrin.

I gained a lot of weight on effexor but didnt gain any on wellbutrin. I doubt the weight gain is from the wellbutrin-that is not a side effect.

I am starting my third week on Wellbutrin and since I increased to 200mg last week, I also gained 2 pounds, and like you, I too, found this confusing. The first weeks didn't cause any weight loss or increase.

I saw my doctor today and he gave me another prescription to take with my Wellbutrin since I have weight issues (I went from 158 to 189 between March and October). Also, he said it will help with my moods as just two nights ago, even under Wellbutrin, I had an AWFUL anxiety/depression episode where I was alone and ended up yelling/screaming and putting a hole in my wall because my neighbors noise annoyed me.

This saturday I will try taking the Topomax 25mg with my Wellbutrin.

I hate meds and these are my first prescriptions in years. (tried Paxil once years ago for two months) My ADD has been acting out during my times of extreme life changes and my doctor said I am exhibiting signs of bipolar II as well. This is to help me through the changes and I can't wait to get off of them.

ANyone else here ever take Topomax to help level the moods and reduce weight while on Wellbutrin?

See my post today on another thread on the board :)

I am about to start 25mg of Topomax at night as a mood stabilizer on top of one WB-SR 150mg in the morning. I have lost 8 pounds this last month since starting WB; it helped me stay on Weight Watchers. I wasn't thinking about food to "make me feel better" as I was all summer when I was depressed, and before starting WB. I am not a binge eater, but I am a foodie and love to cook and bake and go out to eat. I was eating a lot of small, but high-fat meals throughout the day (e.g., a Starbucks lemon bar when running errands). I still need to lose about 40-50 pounds. I also started a regular exercise routine (my goal is 45 minutes of cardio for 5x week), and suspect this will help more than anything else.

Did you start the mix yet? How is it? can you sleep at night? I got my px filled and I am taking it tomorrow. Since I have insomnia, I was wondering if it will worsen it or help it.

Also - I still haven't lost a single pound on WB and I am at 200mg a day (1 pill in the am).

very frustrating
