Slidding into depression, Calling all UK people!

Posted by TheOutsider on November 25, 2003, at 16:26:49

I really feel like I'm slipping away at the moment. After a few days of feeling okay, I'm starting to feel hopless again.

I'm able to remain functional with lots of GHB/GBL and modafinil. Really need to find a good Pdoc in the UK. I've got an appointment with an NHS Pdoc on the 15 of Jan, but what do I do until then?!
I've made an appointment with Dr Cosgrove at the Bristol priority clinic, but I have no idea if he's any good or not. He mainly deals with ADHD.
I'm starting to feel hopless about the hole thing, wonder if I've made a mistake.

Any take on the situation much apreciated.

I can imagine your frustration!!. The only way to survive in the UK is to have medical insurance. I know it's expensive. Does your workplace give you any coverage at all?
I hope you get some help soon.
I dont know if this is a workable idea but it may be a possibility to go to emergency at a psyc hospital like Maudsley(spelling???) and be seen. At least you will get some help till your scheduled appointment.

i dont know if any of this is useful to u, but i really do relate to your frustration.

Do keep us posted as to your progress. and lots of love and luck.

No advice for you I'm afraid.. But i do know how you feel. I had a 8 month wait for a pdoc, and then a 3 year wait for therapy. It is a total nightmare.

I would push most for a Psychologist appointment, they've helped me much more than pdocs.. the pdocs just dish out meds and nothing else really I find.

Just try and hang in there. After 5 years I have finally got a really nice pdoc, and I would hate to lose him. He's NHS.. so I'm lucky.

Sorry I couldn't be any help on the private doc issue, but I've never seen one.

Hi.

I haven't heard of Dr Cosgrove , it can't do any harm seeing him though...he may advise someone else.
I understand your hopelessness.
Please take care of yourself.

Thank you all so much for your posts!

Thanks every body who posted you've made feel less abandoned by the world, and the medical proffesion in particular!

I would have gone privately already but I'm a student + havent been able to work for a while, and that means not much money!
I can just about afford to see Dr Cosgrove, and thats it, if it doesn't work out I'll be devistated.

I think the reason that my referal is taking so long is partly because my GPs doesn't consider me to be a series case. Your right about trying to hurry things up a bit.

Does anyone no were Leonardo is? he went to Dr Cosgrove I think.

Can I ask why you chose to see an ADHD specialist?? You mentioned like thats not your problem..
I just think, if this is your one stab at seeing a private doc, then maybe it would be better to find one that specialises in what you think you might have.
Unfortunately I only really know of docs that specialise in personality disorders, but if you tell me what you think might be wrong, I could ask around for you.

And really, I'd be quite impressed you only had a 3 month wait for a psych.. waits in the vast majority of this country are alot worse. Thats why we need to fight for everything so much.

Good luck

Nikki

Reasons for seeing Dr Cosgrove

Sorry there are some things I should have explained.
I suffer from some ADD symptoms and there really making my life a miserable, i.e. low motivation, problems getting things started.
I also wonder if I might have ADD, because i've got dyslexia quite badly and they can go together I think?
Also I've read some of Dr Cosgroves articles and he seems to understand the importance of dopamine in depression and mood which is quite incourging.
I'd really apreciat any advise on Doctors!

I do no I'm quite lucky in terms of how I'm being treated compared to many UK people. But I still think 3 months is to long for any one to have to wait!

Nikki...

I think what you are doing is really great.
There's so much apathy with doctors and patients -in my experience.
I'm too tired to fight.
I think you're amazing!
