Prozac to Lexapro

Posted by sedona on December 7, 2003, at 13:57:34

Hi- I have been taking Prozac for two years. I ended up taking 40 mg for the past year and a half, with some success, but lately it just doesn't seem to be working so well. I stopped Prozac a week ago and have just started 10 mg of Lexapro. I was hoping to hear from others who have switched. Also, I was wondering if people ever notice changes in their depression more quickly when they are just switching antidepressants as opposed to starting one for the first time (when I started Prozac it took about 8 weeks until I noticed anything).
Also, for the ladies, has anyone had more success with Lexapro for PMDD as opposed to Prozac (which didn't help me at all).
Thanks for reading

I suffer PMDD and depression ( they seem to go together nicely don't you think?). Currently on 20mg Lex, have not taken Prozac. Lex has been good for me, I'm so much calmer now, periods are not such a nitemare anymore.

Hope it can help you as much as it has helped me.~~~8|8

Lexapro generally works faster than Prozac so you might find it starting to work in a few days. I am having great success with Lexapro. I have been on it for over a year and take 30 mg.

I'm wondering why you stopped Prozac when it started to not work instead of increasing the dose. You were only on 40 mg. A lot of people take up to 80 mg of Prozac and some even more.

Thanks for the feedback- I quit Prozac because it never really worked well to begin with, and at higher doses I have more side-effects.

Good reason. I was on Prozac for about 2 years. I personally like Lexapro more. I feel less jittery on it.

Did you switch straight from Prozac to Lexapro? If so did you notice a difference very quickly?
Thanks

I went to a new dr. after ditching my old one of seven years. I have been taking prozac 100mg, my new doctor wants to switch me to Lexapro. I am going to give it a try and see how it works. I also suffer from pmdd and prozac does absolutely nothing to help.
I hope Lexapro works better. I will keep you posted.

When I switched, I first switched to Celexa. Then Lexapro hit the market last year (a more refined version of Celexa) and I switched to Lexapro.

Celexa did work for me within a couple of days. Then when I switched to Lexapro, that worked very quickly.

Keep in mind that if you are on a higher dose of Prozac, you may need to start on a higher dose of Lexapro. I was on 60 mg of Celexa, and switched to 20 mg of Lexapro. That worked very well for about 11 months, then I increased to 30 mg of Lexapro which is my current dose. I am doing very well on 30 mg.
