Anyone know of a good sleep med that doesn't completely zonk you? I mean one that will help you sleep but not give you a major drug hangover the next day. I've tried Ambien before and it was OK but if it was past a certain time I couldn't take it or I'd be zoned. My insomnia is the type where I fall asleep OK but wake up 2-4 hours later. Sometimes I get into a pattern where I go to bed..doesn't matter what time but always wake up at 2am. Lately (past week) I've been waking up off and on throughout the night but actually wide awake any time between 4 and 6 am. I usally don't get up till about 6:45pm. I've been trying to go to bed earlier hoping that I can get in a couple more hours before midnight but I am such a night owl by nature...I haven't managed to get to bed before 11 so far.

Serax (Oxazepam) is supposed to be a relatively mild & short-acting benzo. I have been on it for insomnia before, and it works nicely at pretty low doses & has little hangover effect and side effects. Good luck!

While not a sleep med per se, Remeron is doing very well for me in this regard. 60mg each night helps me sleep well with no hung-over feeling in the morning...

Unfortunately, Trazadone didn't do it for me, the dreams were weird and it didn't help me sleep, but then there ya go: there is no med that will work the same way for everybody...

My husband and I have tried everything and the only thing that works for us is Xanax.

Ask your pdoc about Sanata. It's for short-term use, but my brother who has terrible insomnia raves about the stuff!

I too have bad sleep problems. I took remeron for a couple of years and it was the best sleep I've ever had. you have to tailor the dose otherwise you might get a bad hangover, or not enough sleep. it was also more effective for me at lower doses. Unfortunately it comes with weight gain. I didn't gain much but I lost ten pounds when I came off it
I switched to trazadone a few months ago, and I feel dizzy all the time and don't sleep well anyway. I'm tapering down and think I will stop soon. I don't want to gain back the weight, but remeron was better for me

Interestingly, my two week trial of Remeron just ended due to weight gain. I gained ten pounds in two weeks. The sleep it gave was not worth it. My PDoc prescribed Topomax instead, and I actually slept through the night, with no sluggishness this morning...

Ambien works well for me, but it wears off quickly, and I wake up really early in the morning. If I want to sleep longer, I add something with a longer half-life, like Trazodone or Klonopin or sometimes even Zyprexa. The downside to that is the grogginess and drug hangover I have the next day. It's a trade-off, I guess. I think the best sleep I've gotten is on Ativan. It lasts a little longer than Ambien, and it relaxes me all over, but most docs don't like to keep you on Ativan long-term for sleep.

I've always been a light sleeper and never slept that well, Effexor made it even worse. I tried Ativan, Seroquel, trazadone and Remeron for sleep.
The best was the Lorazepam (Ativan). I fell right to sleep and slept through the night. The next best was Remeron, but the weigh gain is intolerable. Seroquel gave me a hang over the next day and Trazadone did nothing for my sleep except give me very vivid, weird dreams.
I have great hopes for the Topomax, but then I guess I did for all the others as well.
Too bad the Ativan is so damned addicting... 0.5mg per night doesn't seem like that high of a price to pay fro a really good, quality night of sleep, but if the Topomax can do the same thing and solve a couple more issues as well, I be ahead in the long run.
