We have a 6 yr old daughter who is dx early onset Type 2 Childhood bipolar. She is not only on Lithium but from what I understand Lithium can cause skin rashes. Our daughter has had a
"rash" or what looks more like a cold sore or impitago. She was actually dx with impitago but nothing has worked thus far. She only had one rash spot below her bottom limp and has been there for at least 5 weeks. It is not getting better, now she has another area erupting very close to the first area that this rash developed. She also takes 112.5mg of Effexor and 75mg of Chlorpromazine. Her lithium dosage is 750mg per day. We are really concerned and can use some advice. We really don't want her pretty little face scarred because she is suffering from a side effect of the lithium or maybe another med. I would welcome anyone who had any ideas? Thanks Mama Bear aka Tammy

Hi:
From my understand, Lithium has cause of some skin problem like your description about your daughter,'. Also, at age 6, the 750 mg. Lithium sounds to me like pretty 'hefty' dosage, as even growun-up's dosage is 900 mg. that is normally 300 mg. three times a day, from the morning to around going to the bed-time. Then, this might be 'problematic' for your daughter's reaction to Lithium.
As you might know already, Lithium is a GOOD med. for Bipolar II like your daughter has, ... but the higher dosage she's on, the more reaction she may get. Then, be cautious! Although I have no good clue as to the Lithium usage on such a young-aged child, ... but the other form of Mood stabilizer such as Depakote, rather than putting on Lithium as seeing your daughter's skin problem started.
As a Mom of Bp child, it might NOT be so easy, ... but talk to her pdoc. at her next appt.

> H.G.There is no such thing as a "grown-up's dosage" - the lithium concentration needs to be within a certain range, and obviously symptoms need to be controlled. I was on lithium some years ago for six months. It caused bad acne and my dermatologist said that she thought it could even cause psoriasis in some patients. Maybe seeing a dermatologist would be the way to go. As an aside, what's with the "old" antipsychotic? Poor kid, those side effects must be hard to take.
