Rebound depression, Klonopin, or what?

Posted by rainbowlight on February 24, 2004, at 2:09:55

A month ago I went off Zoloft and onto Klonopin. Felt great for the first few weeks and then things started going downhill. The depression is getting worse even though I am taking Remeron and Lamictal. Pdoc just upped the Lamictal to try to stop the depression. Could this be Zoloft withdrawel or could the Klonopin be causing the depression?

It's possible that Klonopin is exacerbating the depression. I've met many people on PB who do very well on Klonopin, but I do get depressed from it and from that class of drugs in general (the benzodiazapenes). About 10 years ago, I had some medication-induced panic attacks and I found Klonopin very helpful for that problem, and much better than Xanax, which can be more addictive than Klonopin because Xanax is much shorter acting. One problem with the benzodiazapenes is that they can disrupt critical stages of sleep and they can impair learning and memory, but as I said earlier, some people do well on them. If you do have to take Klonopin, I'd try to keep the dose as low as possible, but speak with your doctor first.

Thanks for your responce. Pdoc did mention that the Klonopin could be causing the agitation I have been having. The Klonopin is helping with my anxiety, which is what it was prescribed for. But then again I may be so depressed right now that I just don't give a crap about worrying about anything else.

Are you Bipolar?
Remeron isn't much of antidepressant, but it's a great little sleeping pill to take with an SSRI.
How long were you on Zoloft for?

Cheers,
Panda.

Yes, I am Bipolar. The Lamictal/Remeron combo used to keep the Depression away. I had added the Zoloft because it helped with my anxiety. However it pretty much stopped working and I gained tons of weight on it. So now I am about 5 weeks off the Zoloft and having pretty bad depression and agitation. I have literally tried all the other meds, there's not much experimenting left to do unfortunately. I am hoping the upped Lamictal may help. Do you have experience with Lamictal?
