Wellbutrin XL side effects

Posted by KAL on March 8, 2004, at 10:49:31

My doctor started me on Wellbutrin XL one week ago at 150 mg daily, to be increased to 300 mg daily starting today. I've been having lots of headaches, nausea, insomnia at night, difficulty staying awake during the day, significant sweating and my mouth gets extremely dry at times. I know these are all common side effects with Wellbutrin, but will these go away after I've been taking it for a while? Also, are these side effects an indication that it could cause a seizure in me or are they to be expected?

Many of the side effects you've noted are common with most antidepressants, though side effects vary with the person.

150mg is alot to start with. It might have been better if you'd ramped up slowly, from 75's to 150's, or even splitting 75's in half for 37.5mg.

I've tried Wellbutrin in the past for ADHD and it pretty much makes me want to crawl out of my skin/climb the walls. A little bit *does* help with erectile disfunction though.

Talk to you pDoc about going back down and then slowly titrating up in doseage...

Are you taking anything else? Sometimes different drugs can interact in such away that the liver metabolizes them differently than when each drug is taken alone or with other drugs. This could mean that more drug or metabolites are in your bloodstream in higher concnetration or more metabolites of the drug are in your bloodstream longer.

Those symptoms don't sound like seizure symptoms. The most susceptible people to WB seizures i think are people who are epileptic or who have a seizure history and people who take too much wellbutrin. Also, if in combination with other drugs that can lower the seizure threshold, a seizure can occur.

Those side effects are exactly what you think they are. I personally did not have the sweating or nausea, and I have had those side effects with other drugs, especially SSRIs like zoloft. Dry mouth, headaches, and difficulty staying awake were not my side effects either. Naturally, the insomnia and difficulty staying awake could be cause and effect respectively.

Good luck!

The only other medicine I take are inhalers for asthma and occasional Flexeril. You're right; the insomnia is probably causing the sleepiness in the daytime.

I really would like to know if the profuse sweating will eventually go away. If there's a chance it will, I don't want to give up on the Wellbutrin yet.

I tried Lexapro for four months and the side effects never went away, but I did gain 30 pounds. My doctor says Wellbutrin may cause weight loss, probably not gain. Do you think my body will adjust and the sweating will stop, or will that always occur while I'm taking it?

I experienced all those side effects when I first started Wellbutrin, except the insomnia. They all subsided in a couple of weeks.

Wish you the best.

God Bless!

I just went up to 300 mg today myself. The only side effect I've had is headaches. Most side effects go away after a while. I guess we'll have to wait and see. I don't think any of them are indication of a seizure.

I get sleepiness on WB-XL 150 or if I take WB-SR after noon, but I get plenty of sleep. Pretty certain WB messes up my REM sleep (i.e., way too much) if I metabolize it at nighttime. I'd love to know more about this.
