Lamictal = Back pain, weight gain, and hair loss?

Posted by Stephiroth on March 14, 2004, at 1:41:34

Hello everyone! I stumbled upon this site quite by accident and have found it to be rather helpful and supportive. ^^ I just started on Lamictal to treat bi-polar depression and I have some questions about the medication.

I think I'm experiencing some side effects, which I can't be positive of, but am pretty sure of since nothing else about my lifestyle has changed.

I've been on Lamictal for 3 weeks now -- 2 weeks of 25g every other day and 1 week of 25g every day -- and during this week, I've noticed a few things that I don't think could have been provoked by anything else.

I've been gaining some weight -- not a lot, but it's noticeable, losing hair -- not in clumps, but the hair is falling out easier and in greater amounts, and experiencing, quite randomly, back pain. o_O;;;

I was wondering if these are normal side effects or are these other health issues I should be concerned about.

Oh yes, and about my dosage... I have a long history of being hyper-sensitive towards medications, so my Pdoc is starting me out niiice and easy. ^^

Please help?

Thanks a lot in advance!

- Me

I also got severe backpain from lamictal in the begining. But this somehow went away with time. But I didnt experienced hair loss (lucky me)

When I first began taking Lamictal, I experienced terrible dandruff and hair loss. I decided to try a dandruff shampoo that uses as its active ingredient zinc pyrithione. Both the dandruff and the hair loss improved very quickly. I still use it.

Before I started on meds, I never had much of a dandruff problem. but when I did, dandruff shampoo seemed to aggravate it more. I'll try the dandruff shampoo again and see what happens.

Thanks!

I started Depakote ten months ago and had a lot of hair loss. I am slowly weaning off the Depakote and am now at my target dose of Lamictal 200mg. I noticed with the Depakote my hair loss quit after about three months.

Since starting the Lamictal four months ago I have noticed a change with my hair as well. I have had straight thick hair all my life. It is now turning quite curly which is something I've never had. It will be interesting to see if that stops after awhile.
