Had a panic attack, without the panic........

Posted by Jaynee on April 3, 2004, at 6:39:03

So it is about 4:30 am my time and I just had to share my very fascinating and interesting experience, with about the only people I know who would get what I am talking about, that is all of you.

So I got all the physical symptoms of a anxiety attack, my body went numb and I got that fire like pins and needles sensation exploding throughout my body and ending in my head, which feels like your brain is about to explode. The interesting thing about this time, is I didn't panic and I was able to become what I would call a remote observer in my own body. My heart didn't pound through my chest, it did flutter a bit, but didn't pound because I didn't panic and start to hyperventilate, because I wasn't freaking out about the physical symptoms, I just simply was able to observe.

I haven't had that feeling of panic in "along" time. Makes me start to think that maybe panic attacks aren't actually really panic attacks, but some kind of physical attacks, that cause a person to panic or become extremely anxious.

Anyone else out there that gets what I am talking about?

I think everyone who has a panic attack thinks they are actually physical attacks but ofcourse the doctors right away say NO. But I beleive they are physical, like for example, I ONLY get panic attacks when I drink... turns out I am hypoglycemic and it causes these attacks. Doctors NEVER told me that, I found out on my own and asked to get tested for it. My blood sugar would drop so low, I would have severe panic attacks. Unfortunately, I am an alcoholic and I deal with this crap all the time :(

I've had this several times, usually in response to a stimulant. I've noticed that caffeine and something high fat -- like, a snack of coffee and chocolate macadamia nut cookies -- will bring it on, for example.

What I've noticed at the time was an overwhelming _physical_ sensation of panic, and even some racing thoughts, and overall shakiness. But within me a calm, knowing that it was a 'panic attack,' and just waiting for my body to finish with it and ride it out.

Because my younger sister has panic attacks that terrify her -- she's convinced it's a heart attack every time -- I do think that this is a physical phenomenon that is translated by the mind. Because I have frequent migraines, I've wondered if there's a similar mechanism involved.

I think it's lucky that you can just ride this out. One word of advice -- if you can figure out what sets it off, try to avoid that thing when you know you will be driving. I had to do it once and sometimes I wonder how I made it home.

Hi,
I've had this happen. And when it does, I feel that I'm a seasoned panic attacker. Like, I know it's happening, but I don't buy into it. I know it'll pass, so I don't freak out and get overwhelmed.
maybe this is it?

Hi Jaynee (and you other panic w/o the panic veterans)

Get your thyroid checked; often times one (panic) could bemistaken for the other (thyroid disease). Fortunately, both can be treated w/ medicine, and for the panic, try finding a doctor that specializes in GAD, or panic disorders.
