my problem: On WB, was on Prozac, want it back

Posted by Doug Saving The Team on April 18, 2004, at 10:25:01

Hello,

Here's my story. I hope people are compelled to reply.

Alright, last semester as I am a college student I was on 60 mg Prozac and things were good and things were bad. The bad: apathetic a bit, not much ambition, which is strange for me. The good: went to a bunch of parties and had no trouble talking to girls and socially felt really good. Capable of saying anything on my mind and mentally strong. More specifically, there are a lot of frat and dance parties, so I was willin gand able to go up to random hot girls and dance with them and hav ea great time.

Now, the spring semester I have been on Wellbutrin XL 150 mg-- so have been on it for the last 5 months -- and at parties feel much much more out of place. Just last night went out and didn't feel as mentally strong or socially fit. Didn't feel so confident to talk to random people with assertiveness. In fact, at only midnight, I said I was sick and had to go back home. So, the bad: anxiousness, less confidence. The good: when not anxious, more interested in talking and finding out about people -- for example, I go to a lot of speakers on campus, and this semester I felt compelled to ask questions during Q&A, whereas before i did not; more focus; more amibition and motiviation -- as illustrated by me starting two businesses that have a lot of potential for rapid expansion and my going to the gym regularly 3 times a week for the entire semester, whereas last semester I was starting a business but it was sliding a bit sideways and I never went to the gym. I want those Prozac positives without the negatives of less ambition. I might just have to bite the bullet and try 10 mg Prozac. In fact, that's whtat I am leaning towards right now. I am going into summer soon with an internship, so I suppose I have a chance where I could go back on the Prozac at only 10 mg and see how I feel. I would use that with my 150 mg Wellbutrin XL. I also take Trileptal as a mood stabilizer because my doc says I have some bipolar action. The Trileptal was added when I went off Prozac and onto Wellbutrin five months ago, so it is hard to pinpoint what positives and negatives are attributable specifically to either Prozac or Wellbutrin.

Please help! :)

Sincerely,
Doug

Hi Doug,

I would go back up to full strength Prozac if neccessary. Wellbutrin is good for SSRI induced apathy & SSRI + WB seems like a popular combo, I wish I could get it here.

Cheers,
Panda.

Wellbutrin is regularly criticised here for being a weak antidepressant and for causing anxiety. A stimulant would make you more sociable, whilst having a calming, focussing effect. There are conflicting reports in the scientific literature as to how Wellbutrin works. Does it block dopamine reuptake? Does it cause noradrenaline release? Does it block noradrenaline reuptake? On the other hand, amphetamines are known to work by causing release of, and blocking reuptake of, dopamine and also noradrenaline. Personally I trust a drug much more if I know how it works.
