Change in dose results in period of normalcy

Posted by Mike Lynch on April 29, 2004, at 23:29:06

I seem to have long-term cognitive deficits from the ssri's I have been taking , even when im off of them on. Well it seems when I change the dose , like for example , i'll lower it 5 milligrams , it seems as though my mental facalties return for about 4 days or so and then the effect wears off. During that period I feel more close to "normal" then I ever have , regarding mental functioning. Anyone have an explanation as to why it occurs. (In case you're assuming the medicine is worsening my abilities , so decreasing it of course would lessen the troubles , that isn't true because when i go completely off it the effect still wears off , i have to have medecine in my system for it to happen )

There are case reports in the psychiatric literature of mania occurring after sudden discontinuation of antidepressants (almost always broad-acting tricyclics). What you experienced may just be a very mild version of that.

i believe this is due to a temporary rebound in dopamine transmission after sustained SSRI-induced, indirect dopamine inhibition.

Yup.

Been there with a few drugs.

Nardil, Parnate, Effexor, nortriptyline, clorgyline - probably more that I can't remember.

Which drugs produce this effect for you? There might be a few clues there that you might be able to take advantage of.

At first it happened when I was weening myself off Paxil , i'd start feeling back to myself , thinking I have recovered from my cognitive impairments. Then in 3 or 4 day's i'd return to my prior abnormal self. I remember this happening several times , and decided to mark any changes I made during the days I was functioning normally , it all pointed to the change in dosage. It's like my brain is dependent on this , in order to function normally.
