I heard risperdal is dangerous

Posted by Angela2 on April 28, 2004, at 23:11:11

I heard that risperdal is dangerous and can have serious side effects including death. Should I change medications? Should I bring it up to my doctor?

Hi Angela,

Risperdal isn't dangerous & it's not likely to kill you. It's worst side effct is that it raises prolactin & it has a low risk of EPS. What ailment are you taking it for?

Cheers,
Panda.

Its a matter of being carefull and watching for side effects that might signal something serious is happening.

You should talk about it with your doctor or pharmacist, they would be able to tell you more about what can happen.

After experiencing horrible akathisia on .25 mg of Risperdal my pdoc explained to me that it was because Risperdal is approximately 100 times more potent than Seroquel (which I was also taking at the time). It is in the same class of strength as Haldol. Being a strong medicine the side effects are thus strong.

If you don't need the potency of Risperdal, there are other, milder atypical antipsychotics out there which should be able to control your symptoms.
