Any news on the selegiline patch since the February press release? Thanks.

the company [Somerset] is still actively looking for a marketing partner for the patch. in the meantime, they're currently preparing all the manufacturing logistics.
some analysts believe it will be launched by the end of the year. being a little more skeptical about it though, I'm guessing it will be early 05.

I have also been watching this, since I have major stomach problems and a patch would bypass all that.
With no experience with MAOI's however, I have one question: Will this work on anxiety as well as depression?
I know I can't compare it to selegine taken orally, because apparently the patch is going to allow people to take much more of the medication which affects how it works.
Any info/opinions would be great because a chemist/pharmacist I definitley am not!

In the summer of 2000, I participated in a clinical trial of the patch. For me, it was the miracle I'd waited for for more than 20 years. Nothing before, or since, has worked so well for me. I think the patch will have a huge impact on the lives of many, many people.

Wow. The wait for you must be almost unbearable! I really hope it comes out soon. I can't imagine going through a clinical trial and finding something that changes your life and then not be able to continue taking it.
DID YOU ALSO HAVE ANXIETY? If you did, did it also help with that?
thanks so much for posting with your experience.

Suzie-
glad to hear that it worked for you. it's great to have someone on the board who has first-hand experience with the selegiline patch.
I would really appreciate it if you wouldn't mind answering a few questions regarding your treatment history and a little about the EmSam study you particiapted in...
what is your dx? melancholic, atypical or bipolar?
what meds/therapies have you tried before and which were the most successful [besides the patch]?
how would you rate the patch in comparison to your second best medication treatment?
can you talk in detail about any side effects related to the patch that you experience (e.g., insomnia, conginitive dysfunction, appetitive increase/decrease)? In specific, I'm wondering if there was any sense of anxiety or
"speediness" related to being on the patch.thanks in advance for your feedback.

I would really, really, really be interested in the answers to those questions as well.
Please?

I am so sorry for not getting back to all of you. For numerous reasons, this is the first day I've been online since I left the message about the clinical trial. I'm at work and can't go into a lot of detail, but I promise to answer all questions from my home computer later tonight.
Again, my apologies.

I'm glad you came back. We are all very interested to hear more about the patch: side effects, onset of actions, does it work on anxiety as well as depression etc etc.
Please do post again! :)

SadSuzie, in particular if you could answer jrbecker's questions that would be most instructive.

Please forgive me for taking so long to respond.

=====
Dx: >20 years of Atypical Depression, Social Phobia and GADMedications and response:
Variety of tricyclics - Elavil helped with physical symptoms (nausea and body aches), but did nothing for my mood.
Prozac – a nightmare for me. After 6 days on Prozac, I went from mildly depressed and anxious to suicidal and housebound. Two weeks off the drug, I returned to “normal” (mildly depressed and anxious)
Effexor and Effexor XR – Within 2 days I was climbing the walls and stopped taking the drug.
Wellbutrin & Wellbutrin XR – Mixed response. Felt OK at times, but also caused “crying jags” that seemed to come from nowhere.
Reboxetine – Imported from Europe in mid-1990’sFelt just like Effexor
Nardil – Worked great for the social phobia, and helped with the depression. I started going out socially, which I had not done in a very long time. I responded at a relatively low dose (45 mg). Unfortunately, Nardil stopped working after a few months. We tried increasing the dose, but the small increase in dosage resulted in intolerable side effects (dizziness, muscle aches, severe afternoon tiredness)
Summer 2000 – Located and participated in a clinical trial of 20 mg selegiline patch. Friends and co-workers were the first to notice the gradual change in my mood. After about 3-weeks, I knew it was a life changing drug for me. I realized I was truly comfortable with myself. Instead of being so inwardly focused, my world began to expand outside of myself. I did feel a little anxious, and had some trouble getting to sleep at night. A low dose of anti-anxiety meds would have taken care of the symptoms, but I struck to the rules of the clinical trial and took no other drugs but the selegiline. When the trial was over, I remember crying throughout my final visit to the docs office. She told me to try to hold onto to the knowledge that I’d finally found the drug that worked for me. But, I knew the FDA would guarantee it would be years before I had access to the patch.I’m currently on no mo medication. There are times I think I cannot take the emptiness and despair a minute longer. But, I keep telling myself “just hold on a little longer”
I hope this information has been helpful to some of you. When the patch is finally available to the public, I truly believe it will be a life saving drug for many, many people.

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond. It just amazes me that some kind of "humanitarian" exception can't be made to let people who respond to trials keep taking the drug. Yes, I know that bureaucratically that is impossible but I just can't imagine looking someone in the eye and taking a drug away from them that is literally changing their life so dramatically for the better.
Does anyone know if this drug is even close to being manufactured yet?

Hi,
Ive been told by my psychopharm, who is in contact with the company, that they are currently looking for a distributer of some sorts... the company is somerset pharmaceuticals in florida... Besides waiting for a distributer, they still need full FDA approval... However, on the bright side, I understand that manufacturing logistics have been worked out!
Oh and btw, this is all for the emsam patch!May it one day each us
This is the end of the thread.
