Ok this probably comes up once a week or so, but if I could get some quick precise answers I would be overjoyed.
I have struggled with social anxiety (generalized, quite a bit like avoidant) and klonopin is all that has worked. My current pdoc had finally agreed to put me on clonazepam 2 months ago, and I thought it was all down hill from here. Quite the opposite as it turns out. He prescribed .25 3 times a day, which when i take it at that dose basically does nothing. Saw him a month ago thinking if i tell him its not enough he'll simply up the does, and he did by .25 a day. OK the literature that supports this drugs use in sp recomends at least 2 mgs a day and as much as 5. He thought that was crazy when I told him, but 1 mg a day doesnt do enough, 2 to 5 is recomended, doesnt sound so crazy to me. Ive been in cbt couple of months and its certainly not doing much, but i am trying harder and harder. His complaints about inc. are that high doses for long time leads to dependance and withdrawl. I have a bad track record on paper(I admitted doing coke once totally on my free will thingking honesty would help, but all it did was make docs think im prone to addiction. I havent done it since)Ive taken clonazepam before at 1.5mgs a day, stopped cold turkey after a monthand a half and had no withdrawls, other than returning to my normal anxious state.
Essentially, I see my doc tomorow and I need to change his mind. I cant switch docs cause of the time it will take in canada.my doc wants to keep me at this dose for couple of months than stop in sept. I feel like something like 1 mg 2 times a day for as long as needed would be more than fine, it is essential.(Ive dealt with this for years so most of the obvious has been covered). Please equip me and /or give me your opionion. But I honestly believe I need this. Thank you

As it says at the bottom of that page, it is a Canadian monograph. Value added, I guess ;^). If you're looking for evidence that more than 1mg/d is documented anywhere, it's here. Whether your pdoc thinks the info here supports it in your case is a different matter.

I take 1mg a day and my doc says thats a small dose so I think 1 to 2mg is precribed for anxiety

My MD, who is usually pretty conservative, put me on 4mg/day after a severe GAD attack a couple of months ago. The pharmacist commented that it was a fairly heavy dose, and to be careful driving etc., but I find it's not that much for me - I have a high tolerance to benzos and just generally to most anxiolytics and sedatives, but from what I read here, 2-4 mg/day is not that uncommon.
I have seen somewhere recently (sorry can't recall ref., maybe rxlist.com) up to 20 mg. / day being used to treat seizures, and I've taken as little as 0.5 mg in the past, so the safe/useful range must be pretty wide.
My MD also says it is about the least likely of all the benzodiazepines to cause problems with tolerance/dependence, partly because it is fairly slow acting and has a long half-life, and maybe some other reason peculiar to its nature. There are people who have posted here & elsewhere who have been on substantial doses for years with no problems.
