Depression, no meds *keep* working for me

Posted by Harlock on June 21, 2004, at 12:13:51

Howdy. I had some questions for y'all.

I'm diagnosed bipolar, but I mainly suffer from depression. I don't cry or get suicidal (although I think about it), I get apathetic towards everything, and can't find enjoyment in anything.

I'm currently on:
Wellbutrin XL (450mg a day), Adderall XL (20 mg/day), and Symbyax, 6/50mg a day.

A few weeks ago, when I started Symbyax, I was litterally euphoric, off and on, for about 2 weeks. It was the best I've felt in years. Unfortunately, it was shortlived.

All 3 meds, and I still feel like garbage. I don't want to do anything, even things I used to enjoy. I barely get into work every day, and when I am here, I'm useless (software engineer).

I've tried Lexapro, prozac, effexor, and depakote in the past, but these didn't do it for me.

Is there anyone getting relief from any other drugs that may have come out recently (or any other drug for that matter), but specifically have not had the greatest results from the meds above?

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried Cognitive Behavioral Therapy? It helps me tremendously with my depressions....

Hi since you are bipolar you might want to try an MAOI like Parnate. MAOIs are less likely to cause mania. Parnate is more stimulating that the other common MAOI, Nardil. You would still have to be a on a stabiliser and trileptal has few side effects.

Or you might want to try vitamin therapy. Fish oil, vitamin B, zinc etc. Check out Psychobabble Alternative for these treatments (natural ones).

I would also recommend getting your thyroid checked if you haven't already.

I had excelent results from Celexa for the last 2-3 years. Slowely went up and up and up in dose till I got to 80 mg, then it pooped out on me, about a month ago. I still take 40 mg now, which is alright. But I don't think I'm depressed anymore. I tried prozac many times, and hated it. Depakote may have helped me, but I didn't like it and was happy to get off it. Zyprexa worked wonders for me, anxiety, motivation (even though it makes you tired). I had problems sleeping though and at a low enough dose energy is not that bad. I do take wellbutrin to counter it. I was not over joyed starting the wellbutrin for the first 3 months, but learned of great energy and lower smoking. So now I take 6.25 mg zyprexa, 40 mg celexa and 3-100 mg wellbutrin SR. Great results from these! From what I hear even though I never have taken lexapro, that Celexa is not the same.
