ZOLOFT WITHDRAWLS THE ZAPS!!

Posted by Andria on July 3, 2004, at 16:44:46

Hello,

I have taken 100MG of Zoloft every day for about 5 years. About two weeks ago I decided to get off of it because Atkins says it's very hard to lose weight on certain anti-depressents which zoloft is one in his list. I took 50MG for about 4 days then 25MG for about 3 days then stopped. I realize that I should have tapered it more but my perscription was out and I didn't want to pay more for something I wanted out of my system. Anyway, I'm getting those darn zaps!! It's like an electric shock in my brain that lasts about a millesecond and makes me feel dizzy for that amount of time. I have now been completely off of Zoloft for about 5 days and the zaps are getting worse. They started at the top of my head, now when I get them it shoots from the top of my head down into my chest and arms and gives my lip a tingling feeling. It's only for that millesecond but it's happening freaquently. I found that the only time is happens is when I move my eyes. If I sit perfectly still and focus in one place they won't happen. As soon as I move and my eyes move ZAP!! Anyone else have this type of symptom and how long does it last?? I've fought off the urge to refill my perscription and take it just to stop the symptoms. I have gained allot of weight and since I've been off it, my diet is WAY easier!! I no longer obsess about food!!! My mood is ok, though I get irritated because of the zaps. I do find trying to talk gets difficult, like I fumble my words but that isn't to bad. Look forward to info from others. Thanks :)

Geez, I admire your resolve, but I sure wish you would of tapered it longer and slower. I mean I have FILED a small increment off of my afternoon dose of Serzone of which I have taken for 7 years, I am down to about 185mg when I have taken 200 - Truthfully I don't feel bad after 32 days but I do feel something. I mean this stuff is a SON OF A BITCH when coming down or off, I imagine ZOLOFT is no different. If you feel worse or anything PLEASE seek Medical Help at the ER, maybe you will adjust some people do, but your rapid taper would not work for me, I think I would go insane. Best of luck keep in touch

On my psychaitrists advice I came off Zoloft (50mg) abruptly. He was of the opinion that no tapering schedule was needed as I was also on Surmontil.

The zaps kicked in after about 3 days and I think it lasted two to three weeks. I am only glad that when this happened I had been signed off work otherwise it would have been more difficult. Any kind of movement seemed to produce this effect. Very weird.

Good luck

Taking Prozac for the withdrawl symptoms is the best way to go, but I don't think I'd let a fad diet like Atkins dictate.

that is so funny. i'm going through the same thing. i went from 100mg for 4 years, to 50 mg for 4 days, then off. i had no refills, so i decided to go off them and see what happens. i'm getting those weird zaps too, and i'm a little nauseous. it's been around 10 days since i went off the medication. i was going to go to the doctor tomorrow to see if he can help me out of this strange feeling!
