I was wondering if any one had experiance with either of these meds.. My momther took Topamax for severe migranies and it caused horriable side effects..slurred speech...balance was all off..insomia ...among other but did not want to stop taking it because she had lost 17 lbs very quickly being on this and off Valproic acid..(has had a weight problem most of her life to start)...and from what I have read zonegran is very simaliar in chemical makeup and mechinism of action for pain related issues but less of side effects...any input whould be appreciated...thanks

One of the worst side effects of Topamax is eye problems. Notify the Doctor right away if these occur. Yes you can lose weight on it but it is an anti seizure medication not a diet pill. Please monitor side effects carefully this drug can be risky for the wrong person.

She was not taking to lose weight but for her migraine..she stop taking it after three months and went back on Valproic acid..among other things and I had heard good things about zonegran for migraines but as it is chemically simalar to topamax i was wondering if anyone had tried zonegran after stopping topamax because of SE...and had better results...

Hi Niki. I've taken both for migraines, and unfortunately had to quit both due to side effects. But,.,.,.,
Topomax was very bothersome, due to the mental dulling i experienced, and the memory problems. It did help the migraines, and improved my sleep greatly. But in the end, wasn't worth it. I had school and presentations to give.
Zonegran was great, but i think i had an allergic reaction. It was working great, but i developed horrible stomach pains and indegestion, even landed me in the E room one night.
The day i quit it, it went away.
All in all, I loved the zonegran, and i am probably a very small minority who react like that.

I switched from topomax to zonegran. Zonegran has less side effects, but doesn't work as well on the migrianes. The dopey feeling, i.e., speech problems, memory, etc. are better with Zonegran.

Sorry Niki, I did realize Topamax was indicated for migraine. Some look at the weight loss as a side benefit of this med. I don't know if there are more options for Migraine. I use this Excedrin Migraine when I get one and it works for me but it contains Acetaminophen which is bad for the liver etc. in the long term. My son's Psy Dr. was quick to suggest replacing his Zyprexa with Topamax to reduce his weight. I would not allow him to do that because of the possible side effects.

I am pressing on with what seems to be a never ending quest to help my mom find the right combo of meds with the least possiable bad SE...

I would highly suggest Zonegran over Topamax, although I don't take it for migraines. Zon has virtually no side effects for me, whereas Topa's list of se's is huge. I am still maintaining my weight loss on the Zon, and actually feel so much better on it, that I'm losing more.
