5-htp to boost serotonin

Posted by Marty mc Fly on July 15, 2004, at 19:38:47

After some research I decided to use 5-htp as an anti-poopout agent for clomipramine to boost some extra serotonin. I started with 100 mg and worked my way up to 300 mg in 3 divided doses of 100 mg over the day. The only effect I have after 2 months of consistent use is severe nausea every day, even with the divided dose and no antidepressant effect whatsoever.
I have taken in with and without vitamine B6 and magnesium, 3 hours after a meal, with orange juice.

What am I doing wrong ?
Are there ways to improve effectiveness of 5-htp or should I use another agent to increase effectiveness of clomipramine ?

Thanx a lot in advance !

Marty

What is your diagnosis? How much clomipramine are you taking & how are it's effects & side effects?

I don't know anything about 5-htp, you might have more luck in the alternate board.

Cheers,
Panda.

I use clomipramine for OCD and Panic. When I started it, it worked great against both panic and ocd, but after 2 years the symptomes came back a great deal. Dosage was increased to 225 mg. Now after 1 more year it's the same story...
What would be a good way to make it work again ?

Try folic acid, this seems to be a good antipoopout agent. It is used to boost the effectivness of SSRI's. Take 1mg a day.

Has anyone any other ideas of making clomipramine or other TCA's work better/increasing their effect by augmenting, combining, changing dosage time, etc. ?

Using relatively low dosages of lithium (300-600mg) to augment TCAs is an oldie but goodie.
