lamictal detrimental if you aren't BPI or 2?

Posted by karen m. on August 10, 2004, at 9:56:46

can lamictal present negative side effects if you aren't a true BP I or 2? I seem to be getting more manic and depressed as I get higher in my dosage of lamictal. i'm at 300 MGs. and not sure if i should go higher since it will either help or make me worse. my pdoc says the fact that i'm having these issues means we haven't reached the appropriate dose yet.

Hi, what are you diagnosed with? I take lamictal 100mg along with prozac for panic disorder. So far so good with that combo..

well my pdoc wasn't real specific about what i am. he just said it's bi-polar but one of the newer versions they've determined that is down further on the list of numbers...like a 4,5,6.
but i have never had the traditional highs and lows of bp. just the lows. no mania (until recently on it)

Interesting...my pdoc said BP is very hard to diagnose because i asked her if that is what i had. She eventually dianosed me with panic disorder -and if you read about it, that itself, if left untreated, can lead to depression, major anxiety obviously and phobia's. So, since I have never had a manic episode either, i dont believe i am bi-polar (2+) You may want to get a second opinion...

Lamictal is used as an antidepressant for people who don't have luck with SSRI's that aren't bipolar. Just like anything, you have to keep trying till you find something that works.

My doctor said she was giving me Lamictal for "resistant treatment depression" and as a mood stabilizer for BP2. Is this contradictory?
