Contradiction please. The fact is, stimulants DO have a calming effect on SOME people. See this earlier post and followups:

Whether you yourself will have such a response (called "paradoxical"), I don't know. You might ask your doc to give it a try, but if you're like most people, it will only aggravate your anxiety.

the stimulants also increase dopamine, don't they? and isn't a shortage of (or poor utilization of) dopamine implicated in some anxiety disorders? if so, it would make sense that the stims might help (if not offset by the anxiogenic effects of stims).

just speculating here....:)

I don't know where you can find articles but I took ritalin at one point and it made my anxiety/depression go away completely within a half hour. I loved it. The only problem was it didn't last that long.

The new time release ones might be a better choice for that reason.

best of luck to you.;

Just noticed that in my previous post on this I did NOT include the link to the article requested, but mistakenly posted the same link twice. The relevant link is below.
Here's the "money quote":

"Ritalin and Dexamphetamine do not stimulate a patient with AD/HD....Anxiety, worry and panic attacks are almost always present in adults with AD/HD. People [with AD/HD]often self-medicate with alcohol, for example, to try to feel calmer or they hide away from others socially or in their houses. Now, these dopaminergic tablets such as Ritalin and Dexamphetamine are simply superb at making a person feel calmer. They reduce the worrying and remove the panic attacks. They also help an adult to get on top of their alcohol problem."

(NOTE: The speaker is P.V.H. Cosgrove, a UK psychiatrist and pioneer in the use of Ritalin in children with ADHD.)
