Medication depression

Posted by Sebastian on September 16, 2004, at 21:07:51

Depression from taking meds, psycho active.

The effects of the medication on your thought process making you depressed.

Anyone else notice this?

Even if the medication is working, you still get depressed because you are not yourself. Artificial happyness. You are happy but deep down inside you know you are not.

I believe that fits the definition of "depersonalization." And YES, it does suck!

Depersonalization - A state in which the normal sense of personal identity and reality is lost, characterized by feelings that one's actions and speech cannot be controlled.

ie.... Being happy on the outside, but feeling on the inside as if this persona being portrayed, is not what one actually feels on the inside... Sounds to me as if he is not TRULY happy, so therefore his actual (UNHAPPY) inner-self is not in control of the cognitive self's state of emotion. Made sense to me, but to each his own...

Well I read about this a couple times and got a different explanation..although maybe similar..it seemed more like a physical psychotic symptoms.. Not just you "don't know who you are" but more of a "state" you are in..

Depersonalization Disorder
Depersonalization disorder is characterized by a persistent or recurring feeling of being detached from one's body or mental processes (depersonalization) and by a feeling of being an outside observer of one's life.
The symptom of depersonalization is the third most common psychologic symptom (after feelings of anxiety and feelings of depression) and often occurs after a person experiences life-threatening danger, such as an accident, assault, or serious illness or injury. Depersonalization disorder has not been studied widely, and its cause and occurrence in the population are unknown

I felt similarly when I took zoloft, just one of the numerous reasons I have tried to avoid ssri's. Even though doctors seem to think it's the cure for everything! So the answer is yes, I have had the phony smile... for six or so months until I just got sick of feeling that way. Good luck S.

Sebastian,

I think that I can relate to what you described. It's like something is still wrong underneath all my medication. Well, for that matter, even my medication can't touch what it is.

Are you on a SSRI too?
